Greetings,

I cleaned my Nova up this morning and thought I'd take a nice long drive. Well...I didn't get very far, but at least I had my camera with me. At 55mph there were 3 loud "bangs" and the car died. I had enough motion going to where I could pull off into a restaurant parking lot and get a tow. As you can see in the pics, it looks like my distributor moved on me and lodged into the firewall, causing the rotor to come flying out and cracking the cap in the top and at a mounting point, along with mangling the springs and stripping the holes for the screws for the rotor. the first 2 pics I took in the restaurant parking lot and the others were in my garage. I never did find the screws for the rotor, the missing advance spring, and the bushing that goes beneath it!

Oh well...Looks like a Jeg's order is a necessity now!

Hi,
Read your post and I had to reply!!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Same thing here, it was a beautiful day here for November
so I decided to take the '68 for a little cruise around.
I made it about 20 miles from home when all of a sudden I see smoke coming from the hood. I pull over to check it out and I see than my bottom radiator hose had a small leak in it but facing up towards the motor. It sprayed all over the engine and compartment but really didn't lose too much antifreeze. I taped the hose up, praying to make it back home. Drove nice and easy with an eye on the temp gauge. It never got hot and thankfully I made it home.
Rinsed her all down but boy does that antifreeze make a mess. At least I know what I'm doing next saturday.
Putting two new hoses on her. Guess it could have been worse, like your problems.

Last weekend, I filled up the gas tank and was ready to put the 70 away for the winter. Thats when I noticed gas leaking from under the motor. I lifted the hood and the fuel return line sprang a leak. Ever try replacing a section of gas line (the rubber section) while its leaking? Sucks.

Sounds EXACTLY what happened to me a few years ago going to Super Chevy. On mine the rotor screws backed out, wiped out the rotor, cap, and some of the reluctor wheels by the pickup. Mine made a loud noise and vibrated the dash. To get mine running again I stabbed another one in on the side of the highway that a buddy had went and pulled from his car and drove on down to Memphis and when I was down there I talked with the rep from MSD and he said send it back and as long as the billet housing is not bent it can be fixed. I got home, sent it out and it came back repaired "no charge". I have talked with others and mine now has small internal toothed lock washers under the rotor screws and they get checked now and then and haven't backed out.

i had the same thing (maybe) happen to me... the body of the distributor wasn't properly shimmed up and on hard acceleration the dist shaft rose in the body... the rotor made contact with the dist cap and destroyed the rotor... vacummed it out and replaced it and i got home... then i pulled and shimmed the distributor... i used a VSI valve spring shim under the distributor to take out the slack... never had another problem (like that)

i wish ya luck ;)

We just took a torch to the firewall and beat it back a little because our distributor was rubbing as well. Not the prettiest job, but it does the trick. ;)

Greetings,

Well I finally gotten around to contacting MSD and Custom Jim, you're right again! I have my RMA number and they will be rebuilding my distributor free of charge and since I'm sending off this afternoon, I should have it back a week from Friday. Definitely saves me money, time, and hassle. With the weather the way it is, I'm slumming in the BMW anyway, so not being able to drive it isn't an issue now.

Been there, done that as well! My first Nova would hit second gear so hard the door frames would hit the underside of the roof - then one time the HEI cap wacked the f/wall and destroyed it. I used the hammer trick on that one, never happened again - but the hard 2nd gear hits eventually pulled a body mount through the frame. No wonder my dates didn't like to drive in that car :D
