Examining the wreckage

Well she needs rear frame rails, trunk pan, rh front floor pan, rockers lower quarter panels/fenders, and brake lines like I thought. I have come to realize it also needs rear wheel wells. For cosmetic stuff it needs a dash pad, seats, carpet, headliner, wheels/tires, and paint eventually. I want to drop a bigger motor in and switch the column shift to the floor. What do I need to do to hook the floor shift up to the transmission and get the column shift off? Also, how much horsepower will a rebuilt 10 bolt rear end handle safely?

A floor shifter is easy. They come with cables that hook to your trans bracket. There should be a small pin on the bottom of your shifter where it meets the colum. Just tap it out with a small punch and the shifter pulls out. Theres either pins or bolts holding the linkage together at the bottom of the colum. Its pretty simple when you take a look at it. As far as the ten bolt, it depends on what size, what parts are used in the rebuild, what horse power/torque your engine will put out, what tires....You just need to be more specific. Sounds like youve got a long road ahead of you on your project.

Guessing it's a '72 nova 8.5 inch 10 bolt?
There are people running 10's easily on these, with good gears/carriers/axles.

You can get away with a lot when you're running street tires--as you're more likely to spin than break parts....also, auto's are easier on parts than manual transmissions.

Unless this is a rare car or maybe you got it for free, sounds like way too much work is needed to get this road worthy IMO.

Greetings,

Nice thing is that all the body/frame pieces you mentioned you can buy through Goodmark or other places and it'll be better than new! I'd focus on the frame and body before the floor shifter, but that's just me.

Sounds like a scrapper. Find something a little more whole IMHO.

Id agree. If its rusted to the point where the frame is gonna come through the floor or something like that at least get the floor and frame repaired and go from there.

I have frame rails on order. I was just thinking ahead a bit with the shifter. But today I went out there and noticed the diff was leaking oil! My question is why??? Also, how do i hook up a tach? Thanks

Why would the diff leak? The seals and gaskets wear out over time. Is it leaking from the cover seal, front seal near the driveshaft, or out the sides near the wheels?

I didn't look today, I just saw a puddle there. But why all of a sudden? It wasn't leaking when i purchased it or after unloading it.

it sounds like it could be either the front seal or the cover gasket if the car was sitting for awhile they could have dried up and when you moved the car they cracked .

Just a suggestion- look into options for the rear framework and suspension. The rest is iceing on the cake.

Do you mean for someone else to do it or for a kit?
