Guys, I need to get a disk brake set up from a local u pull it. What is the best way to remove them when the ground is dirt/gravel, I don't using a jack is practical. I'm assuming a spring compressor and a pickle fork and sludge hammer but I thoiught I would ask for idea's before I went out there. It is a 71' Nova.

No need for the spring compressor. Remove the wheel and outer tie rod, unhook the brake line, loosen the nuts on both ball joints a few threads and pop them with the pickle fork. You will now have two loose ball joints being forced apart by the spring. Carefully loosen the bottom one and allow the lower arm to spring away, then unhook the top one and put the spindle assembly in your wheelbarrow.

You can take a scissor jack, jack stands and some pieces of plywood to set them on. Make sure the plywood is big enough to act as a base. Once you are done set the car on an old rim or something to get your gear out.

Brandon,
I just noticed you are from Vacaville. Are you going to Pick-n-Pull on Airbase? You won't be able to take a jack in there.

if u want you could use rope or a rachet strap to hold the spring from popping out and hitting you in the face. not that i have ever seen that happen but i dont want to. rather be safe than sorry. Mike Goble's method will work i have done that before at a pick n pull in Oakland.

There's a shock absorber that goes right down the middle of the spring. It would be difficult for the spring to go anywhere. Even if the shock isn't there the upper pocket is so deep that the spring isn't going to go anywhere.

Thanks alot guys. Mike, I'm going to go up to Sac, there's nothing at airbase. I go there every two weeks just to look for Nova's, and it's been quite a while since they have had one. We live pretty close, if you ever need help with anything let me know.
