Oil Pan Gasket

I'm planning on replacing my oil pan gasket cause it has a leak (not sure if its the rear main seal or not). How much would the engine need to be jacked up to get the oil pan out?

Greetings,

I just did mine...Wasn't all that bad. I put the car up on stands, got an engine hoist and hooked it up to the engine. Then I unloosened the engine mounting bolts and raised the engine up about 6 inches or so. Then I undid all the bolts of the pan, and in my case I had to remove the oil pump as well to get the pan off. Then I put the oil pump back on, slid the pan on, tightened everything down, lowered the engine, put the bolts back in and have had no problems since. It took me about 2 hours.

Great way of doing it, however I don't have access to an engine hoist..

you can use a floor jack under the balancer to raise it up then put some 2x4's between the mount and the stand on the frame also pull your cap and rotor i learned that the hard way.

Make sure it's not a leaky valve cover, intake, distributor gasket or the oil pressure gauge boss that's leaking. Those are a lot easier to fix!

Yup, this is probably what I'll do..

Yeah, going to check that. I just purchased a one piece Fel-pro pan gasket for that job.

Thats a good choice of gasket for incar swaps. The little holding pegs that come with it are a god send.
Ive used the jack under the balancer also. BUt dont force it at all. If its not raising find out why instead of trying to lift the car with the crank.

When I did mine on my old 307 i used the jack and 2x4 method, make sure to make everything clean and use a one peice gasket like Fel-Pros one peice gasket.

A friend of mine told me all I need to do is drop the pan, clean it and install the new one piece gasket. He said he has done it without lifting the engine up. Worst case was to lift the rear of the engine up to clear the oil sump. I'll have the tranny out at that point to change the clutch anyway so, lifting the rear of it will not be an issue. Not sure if this will work, never done a gasket replacement in the car.

If the trans is out then there will be nothing to support the back of the motor to lift it with a floor jack. If you remove the flywheel it will be easier to remove the oil pan
