Does anyone the radio interchange for a '70 Nova? I'm going to go looking for an AM/FM and I need to know what to look for. I don't need the correct one, just one that fits.
Thanks,
Don

DCPierce 1st-December-2006, 08:59 AM Bump. Basically, what will fit? Don Custom Jim 1st-December-2006, 08:41 PM The ones that will fit will be out of Nova's, and the similiar body style Apollo's, Ventura's, 74 GTO, and Omega. I don't know for sure but some of the other era radio's from like the Impala, chevelle, and so on might fit but my concern would be the ones that have 8-track also. I think the shaft spacing may be the same but the nose (display) may be larger. On my 73 and 74 Nova's I have taken the old style shafted radio's and by removing the steel shaft cups and using the faceplate for the new shafted radio you can install it without any dash mods. The reason you have to remove these steel cups is the shaft spacing center to center cannot be made as wide as needed (however I have modified the chassis on some to allow the shaft spacing to be wider but it depended on how the tuning and volume control shafts were attached inside). I have before modified the noses of the radio's so that no dash cutting or filing is needed. It depends on the radio. The nice thing about the aftermarket old style shaft radio's is you can get a cassette player also. Jim 72Ventura 2nd-December-2006, 03:45 AM Been a long time since I've messed with the old GM shaft radios, and my dash is already cut up (and I have no interest in being true to the car's originality) ... anyway, as I recall (and, again, it's been quite a while) pretty much any of the GM shaft style radios, right up until they stopped using them, should work ... I *THINK* that even the late 70's ones that had cassette players will also work. Good Luck! RC DCPierce 2nd-December-2006, 07:52 AM What I know is there are at least 2 shaft to shaft sizes. The Nova is 6 1/4" and I think there are 5 3/4" radios. A good source for decoding is http://www.wonderbarman.com/codes.html But there is no interchange. I'm also finding some interesting service ref. numbers codes that begin with 60. I don't have a clue what those are. I guess I'll just keep looking. Don NovaSS396L34 2nd-December-2006, 12:07 PM A friend gave me this link once upon a time when I was looking for a radio: http://www.originalcarradios.com/Chevrolet.htm BUD 1 2nd-December-2006, 02:44 PM My Dash Had Already Been Work On So I Put A Cd Player In Mine And It Turned Out Ok Took Metal Plate And Cut It To Fit The Outside Of The Radio Area Then Cutthe Hole Out For The Am/fm/cd Player Then I Made Sure Everything Fit And Lined Up Then I Welded 2 Studs On The Back Of The New Plate And Painted The New Plate Black And And Installed It, And I Think It Looks Great Bud 1 taz3 2nd-December-2006, 03:50 PM Your cars probally stored for winter months so take out your dash bezel and take radio hunting and you'll be positive that way. | |
