cad plated parts

Hello
I have seen on some restored Novas that the hood hinge assembly and the hood latch support look like they are plated silver cad. Is this correct? And if so, what do you do to turn ones that are painted black into that look? Blast and then find a can of that stuff somewhere? I like the look of it and would like to duplicate it. I know the brake booster is like a gold cad look. But would be curious to hear some advice. Thanks--Eric

The correct color for 3rd gens is gray phosphate or black.

As for the cadium plating it's just that plating, some companies sell paint to simulate it not sure how well it looks.Check Eastwood,or Classic Industries.

Most likely it's powder coated

Powder coating would be your best bet. Tougher and more resistant to chemicals than a spray can.

Also, I've seen chrome hinges from a few different resources if that is something of interest to you.

I would not powder coat hood hinges because the coating is too thick. Also it's prone to chipping especially where you have the pieces rubbing against each other. If you use CAD, or VHT etc. it's only a few thousands thick. VHT makes a thin plating that has a silicon or teflon material in it that would work great for hood hinges. As the other poster mentioned, you can buy chrome plated ones or have yours plated.

These are re-phosphate coated.

I bought THIS GUYS POWDERCOATED HINGES (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/68-79-NOVA-68-CHEVELLE-IMPALA-HOOD-HINGES-POWDERCOATED_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33646QQihZ 017QQitemZ270051429448QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) and wish I didn't. Their chipped all over the place. I wouldn't mind if they were where the hinge rubbed against itself, but they were there when I got them. Plus I slightly touched one hinge with the end of my socket wrench and put a huge chip in it.

There are various colors of that phosphate coating. Usually the hood hinges, and hood catch, and dick are grey. Bolts are black.
I have used the Duplicolor cast coat iron. To get the correct look, you need to dust it on from about 2 feet back. It should be textured, with no gloss.
