I have accepted a job in Richmond,VA. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse. It was also an offer I had to act on quickly so I am in a mad rush to settle my affairs here so I can leave on the 28th. I have some folks telling me to drive my Nova and others saying to take my old four banger beater. I have lived in Georgia all of my life. Just how much snow and salt are we talking about? I'll probably be getting an apartment. How bad is the car theft there for older cars? I have two friends saying sell them both and go with a rental so rot will be irrelevant. Any thoughts from any members in Virginia?

We have site members in Canada, Switzerland, & Argentina. But no members in Virginia?

So... If I move to Virginia and take my Nova with me, will that make me the only Nova owner in the state or just just the only member of this site whom resides there?:(

Have you looked up the climate in Richmond? It doesn't snow that often and if it does I'm sure it doesn't stay long. I'm not far from there and the climate is pretty mild. Good luck with the move, I wouldn't sell my nova because of those circumstances.

Sorry. I have a lot of decisions to make in a very short amount of time. I have a dozen people telling me what to expect and what I should do. Not one of them has ever set foot in Virginia. Despite this, they still profess to be experts on the climate there. I was just hoping to get some information from someone who actually lives there.
I got home tonight and found a message on my answering machine that a friend has found a buyer for my CRX SI and the guy wants to pick it up tomorrow. I never committed to selling it. My friends and family have determined me to be indecisive because I would not immediately commit to an itemized and meticulously detailed plan so they have chosen to make my decisions for me. Needless to say, this is infuriating. I am dying for some knowledgeable input here. I own two of the best maintained and cleanest cars I have ever wrenched on. Each has it's strong points and weaknesses. Both are very enjoyable to drive. I have to part with one this week. I wish I could keep them both but I can't and once one is sold, I can't get it back.:(

I don't live in Richmond, so I won't comment on climate/theft rates - but, I have made some quick decisions to sell beloved cars that I wish I could get back now. Not sure why you have to sell one or the other, but why not store the Nova and drive the beater up there? I've known a host of people who have disappeared over the horizon to follow the "perfect" job, only to re-appear a year or two later, disappointed with the new job and town. Then again, you may have financial or other reasons for having to part with one vehicle. Just a thought...

PS, but a post in the "BS" section and you may get more answers - a lot of folks don't check way down here on the site.

Actually a lot of us click on the "New Posts" button and do get "way down here". :D

Putting a post in two areas about the same subject causes two sets of often similar answers. Better to have one post with all the replies.;)

Thanks for the input. I have added a post to the BS section. I think it explains a lot.

TPI, I have never lived in Richmond but spent several (12) in VA BCH while in the Navy. I had an 87 Z-28 which was stolen 2 times in a year and a half. The Richmond traffic is pretty heavy at times and there is a ton of road construction that is going on there. You will see snow a few times a year and the road crew combat that with sand/salt mixture which is a pain to get off. I read your other post in the BS area and I stand with most of them...if you dont need to sell then dont. I would at least do a 6 month storage somewhere and test the waters for yourself. Hey 6 months is nothing and will allow you to get the lay of the land so to say. Just my .02 I wish you the best of luck and I feel your pain. When I retired we were going to live in my wifes home town in GA but work drove us to MD. Keep it if you can!

Well, it's confirmed. I'm driving the Nova. It will be my daily driver until I can get settled and bring my other car up. I am told there was very little snow last year. I will be staying seven minutes from my new job and both locations have secure parking. I am still not sure how I will continue to do my own oil changes & routine maintenance in and apartment in the big city. But other folks are doing it so there has to be a way. I just can't see letting some stranger under the hood. I know other folks are fine with that, but I just wasn't raised that way. Me and my girl have a special relationship and I can't stand the thought of another man putting a wrench on her.

I appreciate the input. I'm gonna take the chance. I built her to be a driver and, honestly, I have more faith in her than my old beater. Besides, My big tool boxes (and the shop) will be 600 miles away. I figure I'll be making a run back down on Thankgiving anyway. If I am having second thoughts, I can swap cars then.

Well, I made it. The car averaged 21 mpg and it was an uneventful trip. It was long and tiring though. I will be staying with a friend for a week or two. I am borrowing my friend's computer to enter this. I still have to find a place of my own. Not sure how often I will be able to get online for while but I'll be back.

You need to change your location now. You will be the first from Virginia. Good luck.

I have cousins that live in Richmond, only thing I would worry about is
lowland (Flood) and crime. Of course most likely a lot more traffic:rolleyes:

So far, the traffic isn't bad at all. I am driving twice as far to work and get there in half the time. I love the job (so far). Everybody I have met has been really nice. A local did warn me to be careful in my car because they have had a few carjackings in some bad neighborhoods. I figure I'll just try to avoid bad neighborhoods. Still haven't found an apartment. Going to look a two tomorrow. Been a little under the weather. I picked up this major sinus infection. I am told Richmond is famous for it's ability to aggreivate allergys.

I finally got my new apartment. I chose to move to Chesterfield because Richmond is a little crowded for an old country boy. The Nova is now tucked away in a nice cozy garage. I am in Georgia picking up my Honda to use for the daily commute to work. I will make the drive back in the morning. My third gen will finally be returned to a pampered life of being only driven on nice days for pleasure.
Now I just have to get past the trama of the manditory Virginia Safety Inspection. I do not like the idea of handing anyone the keys to my Nova. I cring at the thought of anyone putting a wrench to her and I am told they have to pull the wheels to inspect the brakes. I keep picturing some moron kid who thinks he is pulling the wheels off a NASCAR racer slamming the impact wrench from lug to lug (often missing) and destroying the new paint on my wheels. The images just get worse from there. (Things like losing control of the car while doing a burnout on the test drive.) Are there any site members with a shop in Virginia that does safety inspections? Or do you know a trustworthy shop that would be less likely to abuse or damage a specialty vehicle?

BTW: Antique plates don't look like a feasible option. There are mileage restrictions and I want the option to drive my car anywhere and anytime I choose.
Virginia offers special Antique Vehicle plates in two flavors: black background and white lettering; and yellow background with black lettering. Qualifying vehicles must be at least 25 years old or older and "owned solely as a collector's item." Use of vehicles with antique plates is restricted to "participation in club activities, exhibits, parades and similar events; also, may drive vehicle to repair shops and test the vehicle's operation," according to a state registration information sheet. Vehicles with antique tags cannot be used for general transportation, but may be used for "occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from the residence." A one-time fee of $15.50 for plate registration is required.

welcome to Va. I am 2 hours southeast in Suffolk..near Norfolk. I would't mind living in the Richmond area.
