The best thing you're going to be able to do for your steering on a budget is get the CPP lower arm kit, as discussed in many threads in this forum. There are few options for quick ratio steering for first gens. Wayne at NNN converted and sold a limited number of quick ratio steering boxes, but they are hard to come by. There's a Flaming River quick ratio box, but you have to buy their steering column to use it, so it's close to $1000 total. If you have fabrication skills, you can try the BillsII rack and pinion conversion, also stickied in this forum.

I agree with Greg R on this one. I wasn't expecting much improvement in steering with the CPP LCA kit, but was very surprised at the difference. Still not quick ratio, but the overall steering feel is much better. Another option: NNN has a quick ratio gear set for stock steering box, but is pretty pricey and obviously requires and steering box rebuild. Also, there a recent thread about going to roller bearing in the idler arm, which reportedly makes a big improvement. do a search on "steering idler arm".

My 64 has the quick ratio steering gear from NNN. I rebuilt the box and added the gears myself. Doesn't make a huge difference, but it's noticable. My power steering is stock. The front end has a complete rebuild, along with a 15/16" granada sway bar and LCA lockout kit. I also did the bearing conversion in the idler arm. This by far made the biggest difference. It's lowered a couple of inches, too. I tell people it drives like a new Nova. It's solid, doesn't wander or bumpsteer, and I get good tire wear. I don't want to fool anyone, it's still a 40+ year old design. Those new subframe kits will smoke my old front end. But overall, it's not too bad. And I drive the stink out of this car.
