Changing Steering column, 65'

I would like to change the steering column in my 65 (power steering), to a late model, tilt, W/O shifter. I understand I'll have to modify the wiring (no problem). It looks like I'll have to shorten what ever newer column I get out of the boneyard. It's the mechanical part of it I'm not sure of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ron

Well from what I've seen, the column in 1st gen cars has a steel shaft in the middle that goes directly into the steering gear. I assume your 65 has the same.
I won't say you can't use a late model column with that gear, I suppose it would be possible to cut the shaft near the gear and fab a connector between it and the new column.
Without getting into changing your steering linkage, any other gear that you used, in order to match the new column with it, would need to be mounted so that the pitman shaft was in the same location as the original.
I have seen cars with aftermarket tilt columns but I think they were using an aftermarket front clip with rack and pinion steering.

I am using a tilt coumn from a Trans Am, '86 I think. The length is good and it basically bolted up at the top but needed a mount for the firewall. You will also need to cut the shaft and add a few joints if you are using the original steering box.
