Well it looks like this post has possibly been purged. It included pictures of the disassembly & reassembly process. Very well done. If anyone remembers who was the author of this post or has a copy that could be emailed I would love to get a copy.
Thanks

Hey Johnny,
Is the Article a 1st and 2nd Gen Article (or are 3rd and 4th basically they same??)
If so, can I get a copy as well, please ?! (or the NNN Issue and I'll see about ordering one).
I will have a little time in the next couple of weeks and that would be a fun little project, to rebuild the Vent Windows. I'll easly post up some pictures and can even put a walkthrough up on my site, since this seems to have come up multiple times in the past.
Thanks, in advance !!!

i had them posted in the Web-Link Library for a while... a few months ago i called NNN and asked about posting lots of their Tech articles here at the site and was told no... they had their own site being revamped and have in the wings lots of tech they'd like to post at their own site... it's long and hard work, they may not have it done yet, but they want to... so i was told no, that i couldn't post.
i'd be happy to send the info to anyone. i've had it in my files for a couple years now and have sent it out ta lots of guys... Brent, if you'd like to have the articles, i'll send 'em... you document your own rebuild and i'd love ta have copies that we could post in a link in the Library...
it's a very thorough article which covers the 1st through 3rd genners vent windo rebuild process...
all i need to send is an E-Addy...

well i've sent out copies ta 7 guys during the last day... so if everyone takes shots and would send 'em to me, i'd take the best shots from everyone and put it all together in an album that could be linked in the Web-Link Library...
or if one guy does a great job, host the album yerself and let me link it... but i don't want it to disappear in a year... so if possible, i'd still like to put together an album i can save...
some of the info in the Library's hard ta come by and it benefits so many... we need ta keep the links open and working...
thanks ta all who are doing the rebuild... any help would be greatly appreciated...

I started to take some notes as I tore down 1 of the vent windows and IS really pretty simple (simpler then I expected !!!). I bought a pop-rivet gun and tried a couple and either I am riveting wrong or the one I bought is a Piece of crap !!!
Oh well, a couple small notes I found that were helpful and different from the NNN instructions and will definately share, but...
Did anone else notice that the window strip of felt that "...should easily pull out..." is has 2 pop rivets that hold the channel in and aren't so easy to pull out, like I presume they would be if they had been replaced once already?!
Anyone expirence or notice this?
I don't know if I'll have anything written up over the weekend, but hopefully/maybe soon (as in a 2 or 3 weeks).

Brent once I removed the rivets, I had to gently pry the felt channel out after also prying it away from the sides to break the seal that the slight surface rust caused. They came out after some pulling and prying. I can tell you one thing the channel is not wide enough for the end of most pop rivet guns to seat against the rivet head. I used a small selfing tapping screw with the small washer that are made for pop rivets. I decided that if GM used a self tapping screw at the very top of the frame 1 more would work just fine where they used a rivet. Just make sure the screw is seated far enough in the felt so It does not touch the door glass when it is rolled down. I only used one screw at the bottom of the felt channel. The new felt channel is very tight even with just one screw. You could use some weather strip adhesive for added security. That is how I did it, but if you could find a pop rivet gun that will fit in the channel that would work easier. Cory.

You can buy the original rivets, which look exactly like original from Chevy II Only, but do you have the tool to install them? I had to replace one. I made a make shift tool out of a kit that I bought at lowes. The kit was for installing snaps in leather or tarps. It comes with a tool to set the snap. I had to modify the tool, it looks like the punch that is used to set the rivets in brake shoes except smaller. The key is to find the right size. I asked Joe Jr. if he knew what to use and he said he borrowed it from John Piccola so I made my own. It worked but took some time, I suggest you buy a couple of the rivets in case you hammer it wrong. You also want to becareful not to hit the glass. I taped my vent glass with duck tape and cardboard just in case, because you have to really smack the thing (rivet)to roll it over.

What the problem with using "regular" rivets from the local mom and pop store?

I think he is talking about the pivot rivet that attaches the wing glass to the frame.
Me thinking(that is scary)

Yeah, I just order some of them a long with some other parts, but what the difference in using that Pivot Rivet compared to using a regular rivet?

a pop rivet has the stud w/ball at the end that when drawn tight, the ball snaps off after swedging the rivet... these rivets as mentioned are like a hollow bolt which requires a special "Set" to curl over the outer diameter of rivet to swedge...
hope i helped :D

Well, I had to order some rivets and the fuzzy channels (and a couple other parts), but I snapped about 100 pics last night during the second disassembly and I hope by this weekend I'll have the whole thing done (as I painted the frames tonight) on my site and in PDF for easy following. I'll try to include as much details as I can and hopefully some good pictures to allow others to rebuild theirs with ease and confidences. (as it's really quite simple).
Hopefully someone else will find it helpful ?!

WOW...looking at the responses to this post it looks to be definetly worth while asking the question. Well here is another one. Who has the best replacement rubber seals for the 3rd. gen vent frames? I called NNN today and they told me the vents had to be returned to Restoration Specialities to be rebuilt. I knew I saw the seal part numbers in the NNN rebuild pages so I was baffled. When I got home from work I searched out the NNN part number in the pages and found them to be 44040.... and sure enough it was a good number. I guess I will call tomorrow and see what is up! I know the original OEM ones look to be one piece. The replace parts appear to be two piece. Any feedback?

as ya know, the stuff i sent ya Paul can't be posted as it's covered by copyright... i asked permission to post and was politely told no... if Brent has documentation that he can stick in an album... I'D LOVE ta post it in the Library... the sheets i have are large (takes 2 e mails for most ta open, so that's how i send) i've sent out quite a few... if we could post it here it'd sure save me a lot of work... not complaining, but when ya get hit with requests here & there it's individual instead of CCing... if ya get my drift. sometimes it gets very time consuming. once i was informed what could/couldn't be posted and the real "why's" i had ta re-think of what gets posted in the Library... we need no problems for the Site ;)
if an album's made... if it can't be hosted i'd be happy to do it. with all due credit to the Author of course ;)
we recently lost the electrical schematics we had in the Library... i haven't checked the ones in the Electrical Forum, i dunno if they're still good... with help from all the members we've collected all the years of ChevyII/Novas except '75-'79, but ALL of the ones i have still need to be E-Mailed... i can't post them :( the E-Mail requests build up after a while, it'd be cool if we could link them all ;)

Well here is another one. Who has the best replacement rubber seals for the 3rd. gen vent frames?
I replaced the seals on mine about three years ago. At that time, the repops left a big gaping hole at the upper window pivot. I found good used ones and put them in. That was a thing for a while, using good old ones, but I seem to remember someone saying the repops got better. Till someone buys the repops and post that they are good, I'll use good old ones. I think I have some out in the barn I'm saving for my next project. I know Allen had some also but he might have sold all he has.
Also, when rebuilding mine, I choose not to replace the rivets and was able to pull the frame out of the lower pivot hole and replace the seals. You have to do this carefully!!
BTHOMAS67Wagon
I never ran into any rivets holding the felt strip in. I think someone might have rebuilt yours at one time. The only thing holding the felt in, was the tabs.
BTHOMAS67Wagon
8th-September-2006, 11:17 AM
I have to assume that it is different from year to year, but the felt is not held on by tabs (for 2nd generations, 66 and 67) and had 2 original rivets holding the back side felt on. (the backside felt is the long piece of felt that the window slide up on)
With the 66 and 67 (and assume the 1st gen too), the post slides through the vent seal and without removing the rubber seal, you would have to cut the seal.
Again, I have to assume that it changed from 62-67 and up and hopefully other 1st and 2nd gen owners can use it and see if they instructions are useful, correct and are missing steps and then I'll make it more useful, corrected and easier to use.
Again, I have an hour or two more to go...
