What do you think is the best oil for a moderately built 396, and why. Everyone I've asked gives a different answer and reason for their answer.

What are your main and rod bearing clearances? Standard volume pump? Which spring in the oil pump?

liquid !!!

that covers all the possibilities :D :D :D

i've always liked Valvoline. i've pulled down a couple few engines that were run on Pennzoil and i didn't like the inside of the lifter valley upon tear down... looked gummy where the Valvoline engines i tore down seemed clean... maybe this is just BS but it's what i found... so i kinda like ta stick with the Valvoline... now in a junk POS... heck gimme reclaimed worn out crap... i don't care. but on a NICE engine, i like what i like ;)

I don't know the main and rod bearing clearances. It has the stock oil pump. It also has a mild Crane street cam, Holly 750 4 bbl, an Edelbrock performer intake, and Hooker headers so far. I want to get a set of roller rockers next.

I use Castrol 20w 50; In our Big Block Corvette as well as our 350 Nova.

Greetings,

Mobil 1 synthetic here...Will last longer and has better viscosity than regular oil.

IMO, yellow oil bottles and orange oil filters go together, but not on my engines. I don't like Pennzoil for the same reason Johnny stated. I believe I read many moons ago that Pennzoil has a higher sulpher content, which is what caused it to cake on the internal areas like the lifter valley and tops of the heads. I have seen some really ugly stuff in those areas!!

I run Mobil 1 full synthetic in my truck, and i ran Quakerstate in the Nova. The GM dealerships my Dad worked for used Quakerstate, so we figured that if that is what the General is using, he must know something. Then the General switched to Valvoline.

Randy (run synthetic for long engine life);)

I've read that in new engines with mechanical lifters, Shell Rotella oil is better for the break-in because it still has a good zinc content which has been eliminated or reduced in most oils. Anyone care to comment?
