Is the rear window molding different from a hatch car to a trunk car, the paint shop installed incorrectly and they dissapeared on the drive home

Please call me, Brad instead of PM, I need to know ASAP

Brad,

I think the rear window is smaller on a hatch car compared to non-hatch. Did you lose ALL the trim?

Whether the trunk style will work depends on if it's from a 2dr or 4dr. The 4dr has a smaller back window so the side trim is shorter and won't work, but a 2dr should work on a hatchback.

If they just came flying off, I would say they didn't put retaining clips back on and it would still take alot for the trim to just fly off. Even without retaining clips, the trim slides in together and makes a pretty tight fit.

I've been hunting for a hatch for my 78 Phoenix 'driver-project'.

If you wind up purchasing the entire hatch, might be interested in that, if it's rust free .

and the hatch trim is DEFINATELY different, as noted, smaller window overall, to the best of my knowledge none of the trim fits.

drop me a note with what pieces you need, I think I have a set laying around someplace from our old drag car ( rusted and now made into import parts, sorry),not sure how perfectt hey mightbe, but can look next week ( gone this weekend, so best I can do, sorry, LMK )

That's partially right, now that I think about it. The only difference though is the bottom piece for the hatchback. The glass itself is same size as a 2dr so the top and side pieces should still be the same. The trunk style has a panel type trim that just fits over the side pieces and clip on to body, where hatchback has a bottom trim similar to the top trim that fits snugly onto side pieces and is held in place with retaining clips.

The pictures aren't the best example since the views don't show full detail, but something to compare.

Tony,

Have you actually tried to interchange the glass from a hatch to sedan ?

note the pics how the pillar width ( from glass to side of quarter panel ) is larger on the hatchback.

Although you might be right on the side peieces being the same, I'll have to match up a couple sets with my hatch and see what looks right.

semi-off-topic = went to check on rays interchange site and it's down, wny news on that ?

Hey Al,

As far as the top piece, it's actually 2 pieces that slide in together, so could just be slid further in on the hatchback if it isn't as wide. I'm just trying to think like the design engineers of that time, and would have made all 2 doors the same, otherwise it would have been extra tooling and parts to have made. The window glass itself is same on all 2 doors regardless of trunk or hatchback, that I know for certain.

I'm not certain about the 4 doors yet, but I have one here and I'm going to remove it and compare it to the 2 door trim. I'm thinking along the same lines that the side pieces were just slid in further to make up the difference in the shorter glass, but still used the same 2 door top and side pieces. Bottom panel on 4 door is also different from 2 door trunk, but may be same as hatchback. Not sure about that yet, but will find out when I have some free time to mess around with it.

I have a friend with a hatchback, but he's on other side of Atlanta and forget to check everytime I see him with it. I may get with him this weekend possibly, so I'm going to try and get some better pics and measurements of the trim to compare to my trunk model. I'm 98% sure the only difference would be the bottom piece.
