My Uncle passed away last year and since he didn't have a will, his belongings went into probate. Now that has all been taken care of. Being the only "car person" in the family, the executor of the estate (another Uncle) gave me his car. I need to transfer the ownership into my name. How much are the fees going to be? Is this considered a gift or a inheritence? Am i going to owe anyone else besides the DMV? All answers are appreciated.

Brian, ya have the pink i suppose... write up a bill of sale stating it's a gift. sign it with yer Uncle's name. you should just have registration and transfer fees.
as far as i know the laws haven't changed... i've done this twice in the past (years back though)
hope i helped.

I dont think its ok to sign anybody elses name, alive or dead. You might want to check into that a bit more.

hehehe i'd think the same thing... i just went through this a short time ago with a friend. we were standing in line at DMV tellin' the lady what was up with the pink, the guy had died and we wanted to take care of the paperwork... she hinted and hinted and HINTED ta get the "guy" ta sign the bill of sale/pink. so we winked at her and said thanks... came back the next day, same lady and gave her the paperwork... she smiled and said "looks like it's all in order"
not saying it's the thing ta do in all circumstances, but in Brian's case where it's a relative, there's no problems with legality of ownership... he's not LYING... just kinda fibbing ;)
do what keeps yer conscience clear ;)

I have a death certificate, the power of attorney paperwork, making my other Uncle the executor of the estate, and the pink which he signed over to me. Any other input is appreciated .....

my Daughter's Godfather gave me a 72 Cutlass that was in his wife's name, she had died a year or so prior. he signed the pink and bill of sale and the guy i gave the car to registered & transferred it. ;) :D

I was checking out the Calif. DMV site. It looks like it doesn't qualify as a "gift" from a family member (parent, grandparent, sibling, child, or spouse). According to this, I am going to need a smog, and fees are going to be based on what the car is currently worth.
