What auto trans was in these cars? Ive been trying to chase down a drive shaft for the 78 I bought and just remembered if these cars had th350s it could be a long or short tail shaft. I have a short shaft th350 Im hoping will work.

Most of them were short th350s. I think some of the later ones may have come with the weaker th200 too.

I had a 79 Trans Am years ago that had a 200 in it until we put a posi in it and beefed up the 403 engine. I think we used a short th350 on that one.

Most had the TH350, but I have pulled a Metric 200 before not realizing the difference at the time. There's also a TH250 that was used, but can't say I've ever seen one. The 200 and 250 both have pans that look like the 350, but if its a 200, it should have the words HYDRAMATIC DIV. and METRIC stamped in the pan.

The 200's are junk unless you have an unmodified 6 that won't ever get driven hard, (ex: a Granny Car).

Let me try it this way. Did these cars have trans with the long or short tail shaft?

Oh, oh, yeah! Good question. :D

I put a 350 with a long tailshaft with a 7.5" rearend (before I upgraded to 8.5"), but I had to cut my driveshaft to make it fit, so I would think they probably came stock with the short tailshaft. If you have a 7.5" rearend, then all you need for the long tailshaft is a driveshaft for an 8.5" rearend and you'll be fine.

I used the same driveshaft when I swapped to the 8.5, but it really needs to be cut about another inch to give it a little play. If I had a short tailshaft, it would probably be fine.

Hope this helps!

Alright. The car has an 8.5 in it and I have a short shaft th350 left over from a previous project. So, now I know I can use the trans I have in this car and the search continues for a drive shaft. Thanks guys.

No problem! Now you can use a driveshaft out of any 72-75 Nova which should all have 8.5 rearends. Other x-body cars like Omega, Skylarks, etc should also work. You can use a shaft out of a 7.5, but you will have to cut 1" out for it to fit properly.

For that matter, you can use just about any driveshaft out of a GM as long as the diameter's the same, if you're going to cut it. I have an original in my 78 Rally, I can get you the correct length if you need it. I'd recommend taking it to a machine shop to have it done unless you have access to a lathe for the alignment.

That would be sweet if you could get me those demensions. I found a place in Chicago that builds them to spec for a little less than the major companies.

My 75 with th350 and 8.5" measures 51 3/4" from center of front u joint to center of rear u joint. Yoke is 5 1/2" fron center of u joint to end of splined shaft. It uses 1310 series u joints.
