I just saw on our local news, people speaking at City Council about the noise coming from Huntsville Dragway. My Dad raced thier as A teenager in A couple of cars, one being A 64 Malibu 327 4 speed. The strip has been operating for about 40 years or so to the best of my knowledge and the area has built up around it now and all the transplants are up in arms about the noise. If I can link to the story I'll post it once the TV station updates later.:(
Here's A link to the dragway.

I guess somebody should contact the National Real Estate Association and get them to change the disclosure forms for homes sold near a noise producing facility. It needs to read:
THE HOME YOU ARE BUYING IS NEAR Insert noisy facility name hereIT CAN BE REALLY NOISY SOMETIMES. THAT IS WHY YOU ARE GETING YOUR HOUSE SO CHEAP, MORON!!!!
I think it should be phrased about like that, but the font may need to be bigger!

I need bigger fonts!! I don't think the people on the other side of the freeway from me can read it.
Think about it, you go to look at a new house, with a really nice price. The Real Estate agent tells you "The Huntsville Dragway is just a mile away". How stupid do you have to be to think, "A dragstrip?? That won't make any noise." GROW A BRAIN!!!!!
Randy (way too many Forrest Gump speed thinkers out there!!)

The same thing is happening here in New Hampshire!!!there used to be some Double wide neighborhoods now they have been replaced by 35-4000 square foot palaces. The new owners dont appreciate the noise!!!So now there is a muffler rule on Sat.-Sun. and on Wed.-Fri.nights only cars with mufflers and street tires are allowed. The heck with telling them they should well you guys can figure it out.The track has only been there about 40 years-thats probably older than most of the new owners.Boy do I HATE POLITICALLY CORRECTNESSSSSSS!!!!

I've been seeing a lot about noise issues lately. Here in Saint Louis we had some bill one step away from being law that would make it illegal to have more than so many speakers in a vehicle or have them larger than 10" in diameter. Luckily the people spoke up and got the bill killed. They also figures out most new cars would have been illegal.
A couple of years ago too here in Saint Louis we the tax payers paid for I don't know how many miles of noise walls along the highways. These people knew they were buying next to a highway that at the time was noisy and it's beyond me why others have to pay for them.
I couldn't tell you how many houses I looked at only to look on a map and find a rail line fairly close that was still in service and then took that house off of my list. I guess that's why I bought a house next to a cemetary. It's really quiet on that side of the property. Now if I could only get rid of the one noisy neighbor :D .
If a person doesn't like something they need to speak up. A lot of times the minority can change what the majority can or cannot do.

If you were to buy a house close to a train track and didn't know the tracks were there, then after you move in the train goes by and makes noise and upsets you, would the railroad remove the tracks? In this country today many people are looking to blame someone else for their errors. Stay in your house during a hurricane and then get stranded. Blame the government and politicians. Make bad financial decisions and loss your money, sue Merrill Lynch. You are responsible for your actions, live with it. The only excuse could be that you asked and someone lied to you. Are there RR tracks around here? No there isn't. Not your fault. You should buy these stocks, they're safe and you won't be hurt. Not your fault. JMHO, RM

my dad has to deal with the same kind of thing...except instead of noise: it's smell :D
he's the plant superintendant at a rendering plant in bellevue, NE. they get complaints about smell all the time. same deal. if you can get the land that cheap: do some homework and figure out why. there's a fertilizer plant nearby that actually causes much of the smell. the rendering smell is different. i can recognize the difference and my old man certainly can! but they don't get it. sometimes i marvel at the sea of idiots normal people wade through every day...

The same thing is happening here in northern Minn. with our local dirt track. I used to race and spectate there in the early '70's and I think the track was there in the '60's. Anyway there are housing developments in the immediate area now, and if the track misses a show and it's not because of weather they can't open again. Pretty sad. Also while I'm on the soap box, whats with all the car salvage yards being forced to put up fences between themselves and the highway? I for one like the looks of a good salvage yard. Jerry

I haven''t found anything in print yet but the crazy woman was on the news again tonight. The news report stated the track will remain open but may hve to close by 10 pm and all cars may have to run with mufflers. Found out through A friend the track has been open since 1959. I believe this woman is A transplant and is just all ticked because she thought she was moving to the country. I wish she would move back.....

Harvest drag strip's noise again before commissioners
County now has state authority to create ordinance
Sunday, April 16, 2006

Times Staff Writer, dholden@htimes.com
When the Madison County Commission meets Monday, a Toney woman will ask why it has not done anything to stop racetrack noise in her neighborhood.
Nearly 18 months ago Michelle Pavlik asked the commission to enact an ordinance to muffle the noise at Huntsville Dragway on Quarter Mountain Road in northern Madison County.
Pavlik, of Upland Circle in the Carter's Gin subdivision, said roaring engines and a blaring loudspeaker system at the Harvest drag strip were rattling the windows in her neighborhood until 3 a.m.
"I'd just like to be able to sit in my home and hear my TV," she said.
Sometimes spectators park their cars and campers on the street, block driveways and leave litter in yards, Pavlik said.
The commissioners told her that they could do nothing about the noise because they lacked any authority to create laws or raise taxes without the permission of the Legislature. They suggested she seek help from Montgomery.
Pavlik took the commissioners' advice. The Legislature passed an act last May that gives the commission power to create a noise ordinance in areas outside the limits of cities in Madison County.
Violation of the ordinance would be a public nuisance that carries a civil fine of up to $1,000 a day. Law enforcement officers would have the authority to issue citations for noise outside the city limits. The act also provides for a hearing before the commission or a designated hearing officer.
The dragway noise was reduced for a while last year after the ordinance passed in the Legislature, Pavlik said. But the roar has become invasive again, she said.
District Four Commissioner Dale Strong said he will propose Monday that the commission create a noise ordinance, but the item is on the agenda for discussion only, he said.
My telephone has been ringing off the hook about this issue," he said. "I was hoping we could enter a gentlemen's agreement with the drag strip."
The operator of the Huntsville Dragway, George Howard of Birmingham, hired a lawyer, Strong said. He promised to have mufflers on the race cars by 2007.
Strong said the proposed ordinance would call for mufflers on race cars, a lower volume for loudspeakers, an end to racing before midnight and that events be contained inside the limits of the track.

County officials discuss noise law
Proposed rule would set 10 p.m. curfew at raceways

Owners of two county racetracks might have to turn down the noise and stop racing earlier at night if they want to stay in business.
The Madison County Commission discussed a proposed noise ordinance Monday that would regulate speedways and drag strips.
Michelle Pavlik of Upland Circle in Toney told the commission Monday that noise at Huntsville Dragway in Harvest is invading her privacy. She said the track, which has been in business since 1959, is about a mile from her house.
"I would like to come home from work, watch my TV, talk to my husband and open a window without hearing about the next race," she said.
The races, which start at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, continue after 1 and 2 a.m., Pavlik said.
"I don't want to listen to something at the level of a 747 when we are ready to go to sleep," she said.
About 18 months ago, Pavlik asked the commission for an ordinance to shut down some of the noise from the drag strip. The commissioners told Pavlik they were powerless to control the noise without permission from the Legislature.
Pavlik lobbied the Legislature for a bill that would give the commission power to create a noise ordinance. The act passed in May 2005 and was signed by Gov. Bob Riley.
George Howard, owner of Huntsville Dragway, said professional racing ends about 10:30 p.m. Then, he said, teens and young adults are allowed to race their street cars on the 1/8-mile strip.
Howard called it the dragway's midnight madness program. He said law enforcement officers have told him the program has taken racing among young people off the streets. Those races run until about 1 a.m., he said.
Howard, who owns two other raceways in Alabama, said Huntsville Dragway has been a good neighbor. It has given savings bonds and scholarships to students.
Howard said he recently paid a county volunteer fire department $1,000 to provide fire protection at an event. By hosting nationally rated racing events and attracting out-of-town spectators, the dragway generates revenue for businesses in Madison County, he said.
Howard estimated that 50 percent of the people who race at the dragway live in Madison County.
Commissioner Bob Harrison said he is a former racetrack owner.
"I agree that racing is a wholesome sport," he said. "It cuts down on street racing."
The proposed ordinance, which would go into effect July 1, would shut down racing at all raceways in the county at 10 p.m., require mufflers on all motor vehicles racing at the strip, and no public address systems are to be operated that are audible or discernible by the human ear at the property line of any adjoining property.
The new law would also affect the Huntsville Speedway on Hobbs Island Road. Owner Martin Pierce said the Huntsville Speedway, which also started in 1959, could better survive if racing could end about 11 p.m.
Commissioner Dale Strong said he wants to find a middle ground that will allow the racing to continue and reduce the impact of the noise on surrounding residents.

The problem with this is that once they have their foot in the door there will be no stopping them. It will keep people quiet for a while but flush with the sucess of the first time they will push for a complete end to all the noise down the line.......

Close the strips and then they wounder why street racing gets worse. Tracks are only open on certian days and around here not even all year. I think some people need to get over it they know whats around them when they look to buy a house.
