rearend changes

HI everyone, I am new to this forum but I need some help. I have a 71 nova currently with an 8.2 rearend. Can anyone tell me if I can put a posi unit out of an 8.5 in this housing or does the entire housing have to be changed? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site and I'm with Mike on this (not that I've ever seen Mike really wrong on anything). I believe you can put an 8.2" in an 8.5", but their is not enough room to go the other way around.

The really hard part about that swap is finding the special offset bolts necessary to attach an 8.2" ring gear to the 8.5" carrier.
