Well like a lot of people I am hunting for a set of wheels for my 73. It is hard to visualize what they would look like on my car. I was thinking that maybe what we could do in this thread is have people post the side profile of their cars with the make and model and size of the wheel and tire combos. I think that this would be a great resoarce for people as I have seen this asked a lot. Would be a great help to me.

We too are still hunting for the right wheel / tire combination ... Shane has decided on the Weld ProStars for the 1974 Nova. He is hoping that "Santa" is kind to him this year. Guess we will have to wait and see ;) :D :) .
Check out this website ... (requires Java Virtual Machine) ... scroll down to the bottom of the page and select < See Our Wheel On Your Ride >
http://www.newstalgiawheel.com/aluminum_wheels.asp
... you can select a variety of vehicles (including Novas), select the paint color and ride height ... pretty cool options. So far - it is the only site I have located on the web that actually has a good selection of Nova year models for wheel tire combination modeling.
Keep the pictures coming ... great (helpful) stuff !!

I am also looking for 20X12's in the rear, and either 18X7, or 18X8, Or even 19X8 up front, im not sure what can fit up front. It will be a tight fit in the rear with my minitub but i will slam them in no matter what.
Anyway, i love the pics, keep them coming because i also dont know what "style" of wheels i want yet. I also have all wheel disc brakes, brand new. replaced the old crappers up front with a whole new setup from SSBC.
Thanks for the pics everyone!

I agree. I think they're a great looking wheel for a good price. Just to be different, I considered ordering a set with the spokes painted gray like these: http://americanracing.com/images/gallery/big/bvintage47.jpgbut American Racing said the wait for a custom set would be 10 weeks and $50 extra per wheel. It would have also been nice to have the option for a custom backspacing. With a custom backspacing I could have run 9.5" wide rears with 275/45/17 tires. I'm happy with mine though, and I can always have the centers of my wheels painted (already got a quote for $150) if I decide I need a change.

What size backspacing did you go with?
Fronts are 17x7 with 4" backspacing, Rears are 17x8 with 4.75" backspacing. Pretty much a perfect fit. Plenty of room to spare on the inside of the rear, but moderately close to the fender lip. Not nearly close enough to be concerned though. With the proper (i.e. custom) backspacing, I am fairly sure you could run 9.5" width and 275/45/17 tires without rubbing.

not sure if it's even worth posting a pic of my rims but they're 15x7 "blade" wheels w/ 4.75 bs. & reverse slant tri-bar center caps. only bought them because they were all my budget would allow ($50 a wheel) 205/60's up front and 225/60's out back. just bought 275/50's for the back but haven't mounted em yet. if i did my mesurements correctly, i'll be able to sneak em in there.http://myspace-972.vo.llnwd.net/00211/27/91/211231972_l.jpg

-Wheel Vintiques Silver Chevy Style Rallyes (w/ disc brake caps & no trim rings)
-16x7 front with 4" backspacing (# 9800262)
-16x8 rear with 4 1/2" backspacing (# 9800284)
-Yokohama AVS ES100 tires
-205/55ZR16 front

-225/50 YR16 tires front
-16x7 wheels front (4” backspacing)
-245/45-17 rear tires
-17x8 wheels rear (4 ½” backspacing)

Gates72SS,
Torque Thrust II's, stock numbers below.
Rear is #505-7863 8" 4 3/4" BS +8 offset.
Front is # 505-7861 8" 4" BS -11 offset.
The rear offest leaves 3.25" in front of the hub to the inner lip, and is dangerious close. But with G-Force KDW's, the sidewall is like steel=no flex, so its safe with these.
A taller / softer sidewall, may cause probles on hard corners/turns.

Grandpa - That stance is perfect IMO. Care to share what spring/suspension set-up you're running to make it look like this? I'm running Hotchkis 2" drop front coils and haven't decided on rear springs yet because I'm worried the rear may end up too low. I'm considering Hotchkis, Global West, and Detroit Speed springs. The pic below is with the front drop springs and stock rear.
I wish I would have had the guts to go with the 275 rear tires, I didn't think they would fit without rolling the fender lips. I have the same 505-7863 rear wheels but went with 255/45/17's instead.
Great looking car Gramps, I LOVE that green color!

stock all the way in that picture.
except for rear shocks have been relocated inboard, and I have Comp Slid-a-link.
My rear springs are new 5 leaf, but were de-arked a tad as I was higher on one side than the other.
I guess you could de ark, or lower block the rear.
I have since that picture changed to Tubular front control arms from www.speedtech-performance.com and went QA1 coil overs front, with adjutable QA1 shocks front and back.
With the adjustable front, I can now lower the front even more, which I have done by 1/2", so now it sits 24" to the lip

Question for all of you Torque Thrust II guys (e.g. JTW, STRTLEGAL, 68SSGrandpa, etc...):
Right now my car has stock suspension, and I am looking at the following wheel and tire combinations. From looking at what y'all have it appears it should work, but I would still like some confirming opinions.
Front - 17x7 w/ 3.95" backspacing and 235/45-17 tires
Rear (fender lips are rolled) - 18x8 w/ 4.75" backspacing and 275/35-18 tires
So whatcha think?
68SSGrandpa
17th-May-2006, 06:33 PM
Jason70SS,
with a rolled rear should be ok.
Keep in mind, my BFG G-Force have sidewalls that are like steel. That is the nature of that tire, unbelievable stiff sidewall.
With sidewall flex of any kind, you are going to get close to the lip, not the inner.
Also, I have yet to see a Nova that the rear is in 100% centered, meaning the tire to lip will be different side to side.
I had to center my rear, so that the distance to the lips were the same. Does not matter when you have an inch clearance, but mine, with a 10.9" section width, is within 1/4" of the lip, on both sides.

Just curious if anyone knows if you can stuff a 28" tall tire under the back of a 3rd gen Nova... I want to mount a set of vintage 7" wide "cheater" slicks on a set of stock 14x7 steel wheels on the back of my Deuce for kicks, but not sure if they're gonna fit in the fenders.. they look giant compared to the stockers.

My tires are 28" tall too. The diameter isn't a problem, but you really have to be careful with the rim size and backspacing.

The cheater slicks I want to use are 7" wide, and 28.5" tall according to the guy I'm buying them from. The wheels I want to use are the factory 14x7 steelies. Think it will work?

Are those 17's? If so your suspension is not stock...If by some chance it is, it has sagged alot as most Nova's will not sit that low at stock ride height.

"fender lips are rolled" Could some one please explain and excuse me for asking this question, I am FNG. But im guessing it has to do with squezzing some bigger tires under the rear and I would like to know how to do this. Because I also am in the market for a different set of wheels for my 70. I was thinking tork thrust IIs. 17/7 in the front and 18/8 in the rear. Thanks for all your help.:)
batman09
16th-July-2006, 01:42 AM
you should be able to get 18x8's out back without rolling the lips. You just need the right backspace.I would think 4.5-5"bs.Some of the 3rd gen guys will probably chime in.bm

16th-July-2006, 01:44 AM
some guys use a baseball bat, some a dowel of sorts. place it between the tire and fender and "Roll the lip" be slow and steady and don't rush it and ya can roll the lip evenly ta give yerself a bit more clearance...

I would say w/ and 18" x 8" a 5.00"-5.250" backspace would probably be ideal. I know w/ a 17" most go anywhere from a 4.75"-5.25" BS. I would think your tire and wheel guys could help you with this however I would'nt count on it. Going with an 18" x 8" will be tight but can easily be accomplished w/ some measuring ahead of time. Just make sure you take in account how much drop you will be running in the rear, Backspace, and Tire Size.....

TT2's 17x7 up front with 215/45/17s, 17x8 with 245/45/17s out back, the front needs to be dropped another inch or so, but I think the BBC will drop it atleast 2 inches, and I would like to get the Hotchkis 1.5 inch rear lowering springs. anyone here have those? I have heard they ride really hard.
