You guys back East are lucky..IF I called the Chevy dealer around here and asked for any of those parts, I am sure the guy on the phone would fall off his stool laughing. No Dice on parts from dealers here, I have tried- ie. Fan shroud small block. Thats OK. Ebay was nice to me on that one :)

Be advised that these part might be new manufacture and not the original quality. Also some things are being made in the original well worn molds.

Just because it was made by GM in 2004 does not mean it is that same as came on the car originally.

GM has caught on to the restoration craze. Some dealers are also buying from the GM Restoration Part catalog. Which include authorized reproductions.

No knocking the parts, remember it is still buyer beware.

Greg is right. Some of the parts being sold with the GM# are new repops.

A guy in C.R. tried to sell a fellow Nova enthusiast a repop GM labelled part
as NOS. He(seller) was rather upset when I explained the difference. He felt if it said GM on the box it was NOS and worth big ****.
I did buy an actual NOS part last year that the guy thought was a GM labeled repop!!!

NovaResource

That's because people don't even know what NOS stands for. New Old Stock means it's new and unused but it's also Old because it was made back when the car was originally built. A new, unused part that was recently made is OER (Original Equipment, Remanufactured).

From the people that first introduced high-performance crate engines to the automotive aftermarket, we are proud to announce the arrival of GM Performance Parts 572 line of crate engines. Choose from the street worthy 620hp 9.6:1 version or the fire breathing 720hp 12:1 version.

Built on an all new GM Sportsman Bow Tie tall deck block, the new 572 is stuffed with goodies like 4340 steel H-beam rods, forged aluminum pistons, and 4340 forged steel 4.375" stoke crankshaft. Only to be topped with aluminum rectangle port heads with dual valve springs and roller rockers. Don't forget about the single plane intake manifold and Demon carburetor that really makes these monsters scream!

Each of the two versions is available in a short block, long block or turn key variety.

Short Block - includes cylinder block, crankshaft, pistons, rods and bearings.
Long Block - includes short block plus, cylinder heads, oil system, roller camshaft and lifters, roller rocker arms and valve covers.
Turn Key - includes long block plus aluminum short style water pump, high RPM balancer, flexplate (flywheel) for auto trans, single plane intake manifold, Demon carburetor and ignition.

Here is a list of Nova parts you can still buy from GM. These parts are not repos they are real GM. They ARE real GM parts, but GM "SERVICE REPLACEMENT" parts. They are newly manufactured but often look unlike the original parts.

Modern Chevrolet (Classic Muscle) still carrys tons of them and they are indicated in their catalogs w/the GM part number (and / or with REPRO numbers if available as well).

The parts I listed are from GM and not repos, the dealers that sell repo parts are not getting them for GM,GM really has nothing to do with the GM restortion parts program. They sold the part # so it can be remanuftered by other compines. I can not by any repo parts from GM,I have to sign up to sell GM repo parts though the parts department from the manufacter that sells them. The parts that are sold now are OEM not NOS,I put this list up so you would not get burned buying the parts as NOS from ebay. They are service replacement parts and some differ from NOS parts. I haven't used it in several years but as an active or retired GM employee we have an order line for GM parts. We call in the order and pick the parts up from the Service Parts Warehouse for 60% of list price.
Different types of parts are kept at different locations. I have purchased parts from four different Service Parts locations, all of which are within 100 miles of my house.
I used to drive to Pontiac, MI and get Nova script emblems for $8 and 68-72 eyebrow mouldings for $11 and change. I also bought 68-72 hood louvers and the bezels. Most people thought they weren't available and the dealer was no help unless you had a good part number.

These parts are not the same as the original parts. I have both and the newer
ones are not the same quality. I've also looked at a few others.
Fine for a daily driver. The chrome on the bezels is not the same, looks phony or cheaper.
I can tell the difference in the filler panel after it's on unless you do some body work to it before painting. The original pieces require no body work.
It appears that they changed the plastic. I think it will hold up better and not crack like the originals but it is much wavier.

If your finding parts EXACTLY like the originals I'd like to know how, I've ordered many and sent most of them back trying to get some originals.

I have part # for the venturas also let me know what ones you need for your car. Like I have said these are service replacment parts and some differ for production line parts. If your doing a numbers matching frame up resto some of these parts are not for you,but alot of resto's are done better then they came of the line. I just don't want car guy's getting robbed buying over priced parts from ebay. I got an email tonight from some one who was going to buy a NOS BB starter brace from ebay for $25.00,you can still get the part from GM #3965588 for $6.60. If your looking for some thing contact me with the part # I have lists for Camaro, Chevelle and Corvette and any other GM cars. Ed

i am a gm parts man in canada--the number 3060942 lists out at 167.50 and trade is 134.00 here in canada. if anyone from canada needs a part , i'd be glad to sell it to them at wholesale(trade). sometimes i can even go a little lower than trade depending on markup. i would do it for u.s guys as well but i don't think i could compete with u.s prices

On my 1970, there is a small junction block on the passenger side of the core support. It is where the small lead from the positive battery cable and other wires connect. It is available from GM and the part # is 3919008.

I just purchased a GM ignition lock cylinder for my 1970, part # 20071252. It comes with two GM keys.
The part lists for $32.82. If you can get a discount at your GM dealer, it sells for $22.97.

At the same time, I purchased these parts:
3840083 washer jar $6.16
3798372 washer jar cap $2.76 (had to buy 5, $13.80)
7728956/57 L&R sill plates $42.15 each

I asked the parts manager how it is possible to get parts for a 37 year old car? He said sometimes, as long as there is a demand, GM will continue to make parts.

Today I purchased from my Pontiac dealer:
upper control arm bumpers, GM part # 384220, $7.64 each.
lower control arm bumpers, GM part # 402410, $6.75 each.

This is the discount price, otherwise they are $10.19 and $9.00 each. They are correct for my 1970, but may fit other years. Check your assembly manual!

I've also contacted my local GM dealership/service center. They can't pull up anything. Although they may just be too lazy to get off their damb butts to go pickup the catalogue.

I swear the one guy actually said that too me. That he would have to look it up in the books and he wasn't willing to.

If you go to WWW.GMPARTSDIRECT.COM , you can search the 'RESTORATION' area for parts. There is also a search where you can enter a part number, and see if it is available. I type in part numbers from my assembly manual to see if they are available.
As time goes by, some parts are becoming un-available.

You gotta be lucky enough to have a parts guy like my man Charlie who is really an old time parts guru. Otherwise you get some young punk who won't do anything withour a VIN. If you aren't so lucky, follow Dave's advice.

I just purchased the GM outer door handles for my 1970, part #s 3064225,3064224. The passenger side (224)was a little tough to find. My dealer had to put it on a locator, and he was able to find one at another dealership in another state.
The chrome handles do not come with the push buttons or anything else attached. Modern Chevrolet (Classic Muscle) may be a good source.

That's because people don't even know what NOS stands for. New Old Stock means it's new and unused but it's also Old because it was made back when the car was originally built. A new, unused part that was recently made is OER (Original Equipment, Remanufactured).

Ok, I am going to say it, thank you for defining this for me. I AM new at this, I wanted to ask, but I also knew it was a retarded question. Thank you, cause I honestly didnt know.

Here is a dumb question as well, if I have a nova that is not stock, should I be to concerned with putting original parts on it, or go with my gut and just make it look nice to own? Cause I am going broke faster by the minute trying to get matching years, and every time I turn around, I find something else that doesn't match!!! Very confused and super stressed now!

Bluesman

I guess it all depends on what your goal is with your project, Sid3show. If you don't have a numbers matching car now, and that is your goal, yes it is going to be very very expensive and maybe impossible in the long run. If you want an original looking, but not "original" ride, that will cost less by using OER (what we call repop) stuff. If you just want a fun project with a cool car and are not concerned with originality then you can do whatever you want. That's what I really like about this hobby...there is room for everyone's project and they are all cool in their own way!:D

Hey! Its your car...your project...your own ideas about what you want to do...what could be better than that?:p

Dave

^^X2 I have one of each (#'s matching and Not matching) and the incorrectly numbered car is way more fun to drive, because the other one is still being restored and finding parts is one problem, then having to pay the premium for the correct dated part is even worse. If your not building it for an investment or it's not a rare low # car, then build it to drive and enjoy it!

Thank you for some well absourb advice Bluesman, and taz3.

I want to have a car I can cruise in durning the spring and summer. I also just want to stand back and WOW, thats my car. I was concerned to much in making it original, I just want it to look nice. So I think I am going to go with my own ideas, and try to make her stand out! Thanks for your input, again, it was well absorb!

I do have a question for you guys that having been doing this for awhile... Is it possible to make the items for a 71/72 front grille, and trimmings to fit the front of a 74? I figured out how to bring both the front and back bumpers in to shorten the lenth of the car. It does have a fiberglass front bumper for a 72. Can these items fit or bolt right up? If they don't, would it be hard to do so. I love the longer doors on my 74, but the frontend of a 72 is wicked.

More importantly, would this be frowned upon? She is already a step child of several years...

GM parts availability and pricing, oddly enough, are often regional rather than national. If you can find something at your local GM parts place, try emailing or calling one in some distant state or on the other coast. Sometimes that will turn up stuff.

Any time you want old parts bring the part #'s most counter guys are too lazy to dig past the first screen in the computors. They're not all like this, but they will look up a # for you easier than hunting the # and part.

I just purchased a GM fan switch for my 1970 from Classic Industries. The CI part # is G8128, and it cost $25.99. The GM part # on the box is 6273385 and is still available from a GM dealer for about $24.30. If you get a discount, it may be closer to $20.00.
The original part # for this switch in my assembly manual is 3929094, but it probably was changed to 6273385. The new switch looks identical to the 39 year old switch.
