The 327 was a new engine in 1962 and the Nova was as well with no V-8 option. Why would a nova block for a 327 that didn't become an option until 1965 have been cast in april 1962. Seems rather odd and that makes me suspicious of the stamp. Rather hard to fake a casting date though.

Could be a typing error or a unreadable casting date. The cast date and the assembly date are pretty far apart(7+ months). Might be because they didn't build too many Chevy II 327's in 1965. Assembled as needed? Deck appears untouched.

Sez in the book of infinite wisdom "The block was possibly used for 62-63 Chevy II service conversions, but it has not been verified. This block was also used as the primary block for the 64 chevyII 283."

Had to do with dimensional stability. Back in the day, cast iron blocks were cast and rough machined, then put outside to age/season, for months. Old school way of stress relieving and allowing the block to normalize (stop moving/warping) Then they would be finished machined to final dimensions. I'm thinking, back then, especially with a new design they didn't have any experience with as far as warping and moving goes could be several years old before it was finish machined. Could also be they over estimated the quantities needed from the foundries. JMO

it is quite unique from any other 3790721 I have ever had or seen "in several ways" is it possible it was cast in 62 then sat around 2 1/2 yrs before it was installed in a 65 nova? that is exactly what I wonder.

Gm used this 3790721 block as a dealer installed 283 & 327 (hot rod magazine march 1962 article) in a complete kit you could get prior to the 283 and 327 being offered as factory options in 64 (283) and 65 (327) but this one has a suffix from a 65 327 250hp powerglide. Almost positive he has not made any mistake reading the casting date he sounds certain, and this being a restamped block is highly unlikely IMHO if you ask me it is what it appears to be. a 65 zk block cast in 62 odd but possible!

In 1962 I believe Bill thomas was in on the design of installing a v8 into the Chevy II.

This may be one of those early blocks. This would explain the early casting date.

Now having an an assembly date years after the cast is proof that special blocks can be casted well ahead of time.I have mentioned this in the 67 L79 thread.

What's the big difference in the 721 block and ,,let's say the "early" 362 block with the breather hole in front of the valley ?
In the 70's Grumpy Jenkins said the Nova block was the best 2 bolt block ?

compared to all other 3790721 block I've had and seen ....this one has 721 cast right into the side between the frost plug and oil filter cutout same as all 65 327 nova blocks, but this one also has 3 other cast numbers in the exact same area but below ? never seen one like it.
