So I'm in the process of swapping a 307 to a 350 in my 68 but I ran in to a little bit of a problem.when I took the flywheel off the 307 it doesn't match up to the 350.are they not interchangeable? The hole in the middle of the flywheel is to big to fit on the 350.also on the 307 it has a what I think is a counter weight or something that the flywheel bolts up to and the 350 does not

Can you post some pictures?
All early style SBC flywheels will interchange. These would be considered two piece main style blocks

400 SBC has a counter weight welded to the flywheel,it will bolt up to the above mentioned SBC but will be waaaaay out of balance

Later SBC 85??up uses a different bolt layout than the eary stuff. These are referee to as one piece main blocks

Both engines are CHEVY right? Reason I ask is because Olds has a 307 also. From what you are saying about the counterweight it sounds like you may have a 400 Small block flywheel. But the center hole should be the same. That's what makes me think you might have an engine that's not a Chevy.

Your problem most likely lies in the type of 350 you have.

If you have a later model 350 with a one piece rear main seal, then you are correct. They flex plate will not interchange.

This sound like your problem.

Does the rear of your 350 look like this?

If it does, you have a one piece rear main seal engine and will need the correct flexplate for it. And this flexplate does have a external balanced weight.

We need some info to find what you need.

Assumption? Automatic or standard tranmission?
What starter are you using?
has 2 long bolts (same length) or one long one short? this will tell us what teeth flex plate you need. 153 or 168

Give us the info, we give you the fix.

Yes that's how the back looks on the 350 I'm trying to put in but the 307 looks different and the flywheel is too big.I googled the numbers 14093638 on the block and it came up as a 87 to 95 350. I have pictures but I couldn't find out how to post them. Sorry

The 307 will not work. As you know.

I need to know about the starter you are going to use and what type transmission and then we can get ya what ya need.

If you need a flywheel, I'm pretty sure I have one that would work. It's a 153 tooth. I'm pretty sure it's for a one piece rear main. I'd have to look.

I'm sorry guys I was at work when I said it was one long and one short.I assumed and we all know what the say about assuming.LOL.now that I'm home I looked and both bolts are long and yes they are staggered.I called the engine company this morning and they are gonna send me the correct flywheel no charge.

FYI: Lost a transmission over a 307 flexplate years ago. The flexplate was flat (others have an offset at the converter bolts). This did not allow the torque convertor to fully seat in the pump. I was told washers would correct for the offset but I opted to trash the 307 part and get a new flexplate.

I'm using a th350 and the starter has 1 long and 1 short bolt

This means you have the 153 tooth flex plate.

This is what ya need.
