I know nothing about disc brakes

I would like a front disc brake conversion

what all do I need? I want something that will shave some weight but be good for a street driven car(not just a dedicated drag setup)

what are some good kits, or should I find something from the junkyard?
Im trying to do this as cheaply and effectively as possible.

how easy is the conversion? do I need to take out A-arms and such, are there kits with drop spindles- if there are, will I need new springs? etc

educate me

I took everything (spindles, calipers, rotors, etc.) from a 72 Chevelle and bolted them onto a 68 Nova in about an hour or so. On my 69 I run the Aerospace kit for use with drum brake spindles.

thanks for that link. it helps.

so I called cpp and they sell a front disc kit with 2" drop spindles complete for $499 and a master cylinder for disc/drum for $139 ( I read a thread that you all basically said keep the rears as drum)

so, my baseline = $538

what I would like to know is , +-$200 is there anything you guys would recommend over the cpp kit, that includes the drop spindles?. Im looking for as light as possible but as durable as possible

budget is $500-$750

Will the car see mostly street service? If so then I would go with the CPP setup but if it's going to see mostly track time then I would look at someone like Wilwood for drag brakes.

so I'll be adding weight to the car? that is not good.

it will be driven maybe 300 miles a year, but I think its honestly gonna be 50/50 street/strip

maybe I'll just stick with my drums

The Aerospace kit I used shaved about 30 lbs. off the drums weight.

is it useable on a street car?

how much improvement can I expect in stopping performance. only hard stops will be at the track

These are the Aerospace I'm getting after I get my X-mas bonus. Shhhh don't tell my wife. I told her no bonus this year.:D They take an extra 5% off if you order over the phone plus free shipping. I've also read you might need to get a master cylinder with a smaller bore with the disc brake upgrade so you don't have to pull on the steering wheel to hit the brakes. That's just what I've read though. I'd wait and try it with the one I have then decide.

Non vented rotors= brake fade on a street car.

I actually think you are right.
but the weight addition is probably just a few extra pounds per side.
my cpp master and pv is a heavier cast iron.
but for the suspected gain in weight- the added stopping power is priceless.

I drive my car everywhere.....well, never more than 2000 miles in a week!
Mine are the vented, stock style rotors.

I agree, I have put disc's on all of my cars, I was just stating what I have noticed about the weight, iron disc's are heavier than drums on our cars

I think ill just keep the drums and rebuild it to like new unless I find a smoking deal on discs.

What will it cost to rebuild manual drums with new master cylindere etc. What all needs changed?

You could go the route of the LS Camaro brake system. It requires a small caliper bracket that bolts to your drum spindle. VoodooII is headed down this path right now, his all in cost seemed fairly inexpensive. Here is a pic of the bracket needed. This one is still bolted to its fixture in the machine.

I think the amount of weight being added is not worth worrying about. I had used everything off a 72 lemans and my car weighed right a 3,000# with ralleys all the way around.(without me in it) Car was at the time a street more than strip running 11.20's. Being able to stop for 1st return road from 120mph at the dragstrip was a nice thing.

damn. is the braking with discs THAT much better than drums? I thought it was only a problem when heat really built up in the system? ie, after repeated hard braking, like on a circuit racing car.

damn. is the braking with discs THAT much better than drums? It was in my car, I wouldn't go back to drums to save 100lbs.

alright, I decided to go the ls1 brakes route.

Ive got the brackets, rotors, pads, and calipers

I need
disc/drum master cylinder(manual)
proportioning valve/combination valve

can I get recommendations on these?

thanks
