Replacing lower ball joints

Whats involved replacing a lower ball joint on a 69 nova? I swapped coil springs the other day and ended up tearing the rubber grease boot on the ball joint when using the pickle fork seperator. Can I just replace the torn boot? The ball joint is fine. Are any special tools required to remove lower ball joint and replace? Thanks.

They have to be pressed in and out, but there is a tool to do it so you don't have to remove the lower arms. You can just replace the boot though if the ball joint is good, but if it has more than around 75K on it you might want to consider new ones to save having to redo the job later.

Thanks for the advice. Is the upper one bolted in place? I'm looking in the Ground Up catalog and it shows some with bolts. Does autozone, advance , or napa sell just the grease boot or do I buy the lower ball joint and remove boot from it?

Check napa- i dunno if you can get boots or not if not you could try buying a ball joint, you wont need to remove the ball joint to just put the boot on either....the upper is rivets unless its been replaced in which case it then has bolts...

Not all boots will fit ball joints, even some Moogs dont fit...Take a big hammer, smake the ball joint it will fly out. Take ball joint installer tool and go in very easy..takes me 30 minutes per side from sick to ball joint...Of course I've done it enought times..lol

Next time dont use a pickel fork, loosen the nut just for enough space for the knuckle to move and smack the side of it with a decent mallet. pops off.
