Ford Power Rack Leaking

Hey everyone,

I finally got my Nova going only to find out that the stupid Ferd part on my car is leaking. My Dad read somewhere that the GM pump puts out to much pressure for the Ferd rack.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any solutions?

I have been told Chevy power steering pumps put out around 1200 psi and Ford's rack and pinion likes to have no more than 800psi, I found a reducer thats screwes into the chevy pump thats suppose to fix the problem, I just got doing mine so I will let you know how it works.

Oh no he said the F word were doomed doomed I tell you. Do not know a lot. But I called a guy and asked him and he said that the new smaller pumps will work but the older lager pumps will not. Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys,

Norm, please let me know how your reducer works. So far I priced one and it was $85 from CPP (i think). I'd rather have a cheaper but same quality solution if at all possible.

TG, it is leaking from every place a hose enters the rack (seemingly). I realized the severity of the leak late Sun. and haven't had the time to take the rack out. Will do Sat. Just by looking there is fluid everywhere but seems to be coming from the seals at the rack.

Tim, I'll look in to that. That could be a cheaper alternative.

Sux because after +2 years I finally got the thing going and now it's sitting due to another ferd part! Yes I have another, my rear end disk calipers (brand new). so far they are ok but had to rebuild one because they pinched the rubber.

Thanks again!!!

Bill's Hot Rod Company in Covina, California has a shim kit (GM pump) available for the flow valve. They reduce pressure of pump to the rack, 1 shim 1270 psi, 2 shims 1240 psi, 3 =1000 psi, 4=970 psi, 5= 700 psi.

CPP has them for $15 or so.

Thanks NOGO,

I looked up the shim kit you mentioned online (found another one on sachserodshop.com). Sweet, $15 is my kind of budget. Have you used this set up before? Is the pump difficult to modify? Do you know if this works well or if I should just spend the money and get an adjustable valve?

Sorry for all the questions. Just want to get it up and running again this weekend.

Hi,
If it is leaking from the fittings is is not caused by too much pressure. It sound like you may not have the correct fittings to fit the rack. What are you using for hoses?

Tim knows! The guys over at LS1tech.com change out the pressure spring in the pump to lower the pressure. It is easy and cheap.

Thanks Tim,

We put in a powersteering hose kit from CPP. We may have simply pinched the o ring or not have tight enough. We're gonna take off the rack and check for those issues in the coming days.

In the meantime we did pick up the shim kit from CPP because I did have the "quick steer" issue. The first time I changed lanes I thought my car was possessed!

Thanks guys,

I love this site!

The shim kit will help some but to really fix it correctly it needs a flow reducer in the pressure port. I have these from Lee Manufacturing that lower the flow from 3.5 gpm to 2 gpm.
