I need front and rear shocks for my 74....

What are the best to install? Is it something that can be done fairly easily? What do I need to look out for?

What type of springs do you have and what type of driving? Drag racing or autocrossing? Just cruising?

The best shocks to install are the ones that have valving to match your springs.

Id do KYBs just a touch sportier than munroes and prices about the same... That said Im running Bilsteins but the are way more than cruising shocks.

Meaning? In a good way? I had the Bils on my 88 535i BMW. I always associate them with foreign cars.

KYB have a higher gas pressure than Munroe....

were a bit of a pain to install.. bilstine are the same high gas pressure.... read up on the difference between the KYB, BILSTINE and the munroe..... the difference between a mono tube shock...

I would think the edelbroc IAS shock would be a good shock.. but have not, or no not, any one that has them...

Lots of options in the stock replacement like the a couple of different Monroes and KYBs. The Edelbrocks are a nice step up. A ran a set several years ago on a 3rd gen Camaro. They are definitely firmer, but not in the same catagory as Koni. QA-1 has a couple of options as well that are a step from stock and full performance.

one thing that i dont know is if my car is multi leaf or single..nor do i know what a leaf is :oGo look under the rear tires(back of the car).multi leafs are more then 1 leaf spring stacked together....mono is 1 single leaf...Leaf springs absorb the weight of the back of the car.....go look and report back

The Sensatracs are not made to control a 600 lbs spring. It will work it to death. It is ok to over shock, but never under shock.

what about them monroe ones that me and b man were talking about

I like KYB's. I've used them on my wifes old 3rd gen 87 RS and they worked excellent. On my old 70 I had KYB's in the front so it didnt bounce alot and I used Monroe gas matics in back because KYB's will raise the back of the car almost an 1" and the car had multi leafs so I didn't want a stiff ride. Car was lowered and it rode and handled awesome.

I think the sensa-tracs would work too. I used them in my moms 91 blazer and it rode nice.

I just installed a set of sensa tracks yestarday, i like them so far, i would rather have them be a bit firmer but they are a good cruising shock.

i run sensatracts but are way too soft, very weak shocks, broke about 4 pairs for the rear on a daily driven 67. The front has edelbrocks and are just right. If you get sensatracs save your receipts.

ya i would like some of them edelbrock ones but jezz they are way to much money for just shocks im sure there great but not the price

Oscar,

Even though you said you wanted them for cruising do you do any "spirited" driving? If so i would go with the KYB's.

Seems like some on here have had problems with the Monroes but then again that depends on how hard they drove the car.

Bruce is a jet engine mechanic so I would imagine he has a pretty good grasp on how things work. So, upon his recommendation, I would go with the Monroes if all your trying to do is to get from point A to point B but look good doing it!

Hey BM...
Do you know the extended length (rear) of the Monroe Sensatracs? I'm looking for an extended length of 22 1/2 inches. The multileafs weren't quite tall enough for my ride height so I fabbed up some taller shackles. According to my figures I'll need a taller shock or an extensions.(don't really want those)
BTW, my best price on those were 38.00 each, is that about right?
Thanks, JD
