74 nova steering column question

I replaced my lock cylinder and rack and sector gear, im having trouble getting the two to engage each other. I was wondering is there some special kind of trick? The lock cylinder is in the lock position as well as the rack. :confused:

I replaced mine quite some time ago, but as I recall the lock cylinder had to be in a certain position before installing. It should say in the instructions. Hope this helps.

Take the entire lock cylinder back out, look into the hole and find the largest groove? or whatever you might call it. It's bigger than the rest of the gears. Go ahead and push the rod down til it would feel like it's in the ON position and then see if the teeth line up. If not, you will have to pull the little gear off and "retime" it until it meshes right. I could fix it for you in 10 seconds, but it's harder to explain. Hope that helps.
