Hadn't changed out shocks in my 63 for quite some time and forgot (CRS) how to keep those pesky bolts from turning while loosening the nuts to remove the shock tower. Any and all advice appreciated.

On mine, the shoulders on the 'carriage' bolts were completely worn down, so pretty much nothing could stop them from turning, no screwdriver jammed in, etc., would work for me. In the end, all I could do was use one of the nut breaker tools to get the nuts off, then I could remove the towers.

Thanks Greg,
Been trying all you've tried for several days now and will seek out and secure the infamous, "Nut Breaker"... It's been breaking mine for too long :}

Many thanks. Talking with a mechanic today, he suggested the cutting disk method. I have such a beast and will attack with vigor on the morrow to be followed up with a trip to the hardware store for some carriage bolts (or hex heads, have to look for a coin to flip)...http://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif

Well I couldn't find a nut breaker so I had to use my trusty drill and a cutoff disk for several of the bolts. Finally able to get it done without too much blue air and injuries.http://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Thanks again for your input and help.

Glad to hear of it. In spite of all my threats, I didn't weld the new bolts in place, since the hardware store carriage bolts have a deeper shoulder than the original ones ever did, and they fit right into the square slots. I also ended up getting different towers that had been sandblasted, and got those powdercoated.

Yours are much prettier than mine. After the beating mine took from the disk devil I'm happy they still have a shape to them. Question though, I'm planning to use hex heads instead of carriage bolts. Good, or bad idea? Thanks again.

I would say bad idea, because you could be in the same spot a couple years down the road. :no: Carriage bolts are cheap.

Glad to hear it all worked out. If nothing else, it's always good to know you aren't the only one this happened to.

Thanks,

While I'm at it, do you know of any source for those stinking little pins that hold the vent window handle on? Mine fell off, along with the handle while driving the other day when I opened it. Lucky for me I found the handle...

Too bad I didn’t see this earlier; I was going through the same thing. What a PITA to get these off!! I was able to wedge a flathead on the inner two as mine had a tab to wedge between. The outer ones were another story. I had to get another set of hands and use a pair of vice grips to get them off. I actually go the two outer ones off with the vice grips and one of the inner ones using the wedge technique. The forth one was loosened and the tower was able to slide off. Glad it all worked out!!!:D Here is my thread of the ChurchBoy and CPP upgrade...

Well, they're called roll pins, so I don't know if the local hardware store will have them, but you will probably have to buy a pack or an assortment, unless someone here has extras.

You could also post in Parts Wanted to see if anyone has them laying around.

Thanks again.

Forgot to tell you I'm in Roswell. Home of the little green/gray aliens and not much else. Could there be a website with such wonderful things?

Take a look at that Google search, and scroll down to Shopping Results, and there are some direct links to roll pin assortments you can buy online.
