steering question

Hey everyone, I had a question about a steering problem I've been having and was hoping someone could shed some light as I have no clue about steering, and the Chilton manual is crap.

Car: '70 Nova SS 396

Description: There is a small "box" just below the firewall, in line with the steering shaft that holds fluid. It has four bolts, one on each corner. In the middle there is a screw with an allen head. The lid twists when the bolts are taken off, but does not come off, it looks like the lid is threaded onto the center bolt.

Problem: Lots of fluid leaking through lid, even with all bolts tightened down. I cannot take the lid off without either taking the center allen bolt off (did not do this in fear if messing up some internals somehow), or unbolting my headers (which i do not want to do, as i just put them in and it was a pain in the butt). I need to get the lid off so I can put some gasket material on the surface and re-assemble to fix the leak. Can anyone help? This is the last thing I need to fix in order to get the car out of the garage and driving!

Thanks everyone!!

Your steering box is leaking. I would replace it or get it rebuilt.

Yes the lid does unscrew and if you buy a rebuild kit it will have a metal gasket with rubber on it to seal the lid.
