HEI Dist and Air Cleaner

It looks like an HEI will fit in my '71 and clear the firewall by ... Oh... maybe 0.001 inch!:bored: Unfortunately, the air cleaner totally does not fit with it. What have you guys with HEIs done for an aircleaner on a single 4-barrel carb?

I use a stock L78 air cleaner as. with an HEI and no issues.

I bought the off-set base and have plenty of clearance. If you talk to the nearest Auto Zone / Advanced Auto or other suitable parts counter, use this number: 85-3540

That is a K&N air cleaner base and here is the number for the stud:

Spectre Industries 4215

I use this set-up on my 66 and I have less room than you..

Hope this helps

I don't remember any HEI-air cleaner issues with mine using a generic 14" chrome unit, or a Moroso aluminum drop base model. What carb/air cleaner combo are you using?

The carb is a Holley street avenger. The cleaner is an Edelbrock with a slightly dropped base, probably about 14" or so.

Has your firewall been modified? Unless it has been, the spark wire will rub the firewall and cause you problems down the road.

Good point. I think it clears but I will double check.

Most problems with Dist hitting firewall are a result of bad sub-frame bushings.

Not on the early 3rd gens. The firewalls weren't designed for an HEI until 73 or 74. You'll have spark arching beteen the HEI and firewall at some point unless the firewall has been modified.

I have new energy suspension bushings all the way around and i can fit the HEI cap in but the spark plug boot will rub.

If the rain ever stops I will stab it in and give it a try. I'll let you know what happens!
