: Inline 6 Camshaft removal....!!

Just bought a 250 I6 and I'm in the disassembly process. I seem to be missing the boat on removing the camshaft. Does it need some persuasion in order to slide it out smoothly or should it slide out with little effort. I haven't attempted the persuasion method yet, but I'm getting close!

It's basically a bare block, except for the lifters. As soon as I remove the camshaft I can softly push out the lifters. I won't be using the camshaft since I'm rebuilding everything with new parts.

Looks like I need to use a little "Tim Allen" persuasion?

It's basically a bare block, except for the lifters. As soon as I remove the camshaft I can softly push out the lifters. I won't be using the camshaft since I'm rebuilding everything with new parts.

I have never rebiult a l6.. but the two bolts over the distributor gear.. is there a meshing gear there? seem like there should be as L6 distributors only have a spade connector... and it must have a corresponding gear to drive the distributor....

have you removed the gear drive for the distributor?
Looks like its still in place....

I'll check it out in the morn...the two bolts you see bolted down the oil pump assembly. I just loosely threaded them back in....

How about removing the lifters BEFORE trying to remove the camshaft.

There is a retaining plate behind the cam gear that has to be removed. There should be access holes in the cam gear to take the 2 bolts out. Then it should slide right out.

yup
make sure the lifters are pulled out all the way or at least most of the way.
there are 2 holes in the cam gear to allow you to remove two phillips head bolts (i think they were phillips???) after all that i gave it a light tap with a rubber mallet just to loosen up everything.
might not have needed it, but i like to hit things with hammers.

Wellllll.....the lifters weren't the issue, the retaining screws in the cam plate were! They were covered with sludge, and yup they are phillips head screws! Why in the world would they use phillip head screws and not a small hex bolt, 3/8 or 7/16, I'll never know! One came out with ease and looks like I'll have to drill out the other one since I kinda strip out the phillips head....dam it!

no that's cause the guy that put it in used a bigger non rubber hammer. :eek: :D
