Hey Bluesman: I have seen a white 70 coupe a few times at the wednesday night summer car show at Mervyns shopping plaza in Santa Clara. He usually shows up kinda late and doesn't stay long. I never met the dude. There is also a red 1972 coupe tat the same show that the owner told me was a Hertz renta car in its early days. I only attend the show about 1 of every 3 weeks in the summer. Get dirty looks on hot days when I pull in with windows up and AC cranked. How is your Nova doin? Mine is not allow out of the garage in the winter..

Hey Sonny! Mine is down hard right now. Doing a tear-down and rebuild on the rotating assembly, and also putting the correct speedo gears in the back of the tranny (changed to a 3.73 rear so it has been reading about 30% fast!). I had hoped to get it running for Sunday's BBQ but the crank is still at the shop.

Bluseman, are you rebuilding the engine for some reason? Mine is tired but I probably will do the tranny first. Has developed a small leak. I had drive shaft problems and it turned out my exhaust pipes were too close, about a half inch from the shaft just behind the tranny tailshaft. Kept warping, so I had a new shaft built and moved the exhaust. Same mufflers and the car sounded better - go figure. I travel so much for work, I came home once and just went out in the garage and sat in it for a while. I really like that car.

The teardown started out as something simple because I was bored over the holidays...then things sort of escalated!:o Let's say I had a little surprise when I cracked it open.

Well...actually two surprises....

First Surprise: This one I need some help with. I pulled the clutch and found the pilot bearing was toasted. Little needle bearings everywhere and a small amount of machine work on the snout of the tranny input shaft. I thought I had checked the alignment and it looked OK, but is that what caused it? Should I look for another kind of pilot bearing?

Second Surprise: Mounted the engine on the stand then rolled it over to get at the oil pan. Heard what sounded like a beer can rattling inside when I did. Yep...the oil pump pickup had dropped off. So much for my friend's advice not to tack weld it in place. Now I know! Can't believe it didn't get sucked up into the rods and crank and destroy everything!!

So the crank is at Morgan's getting reground and re-chamfered. It will go back together with a bigger oil pan (Moroso) and a hi-pressure pump with a Moroso bolt-on pickup.

You gotta love this hobby!!:D I totally know what you mean about loving the car.

Bluseman, you know as much as I do, the project is never really complete. It just gets closer at times and the objective is to keep it close. I tell people when I retire in june of 2010, I'm getting in the Nova, switching on the AC, and driving to Key West for a couple Margaritas. When I told Steve over at South Bay Driveline, he asked if he could go with me. So I'm sure I will need to rebuild my tired motor before then, just to keep it close. It currently has 136,000 miles, runs good but just has that tired engine feel. I thought about a crate motor but I'd give up the matching numbers if I did. Time may force it though.

Do you hit any of the Pleasanton area car shows? If so I could roll over to one this spring/summer and we could compare notes.

Oh man I wish I could retire in 2010! With 2 kids in college I am a loooooong way away from that!!:o Key West! :yes:Margaritas! :yes:Parrot Heads Forever!:yes:

136,000 may be about all you're going to get out of one of these old carburetted engines. I would just see about freshening it up. As long as the block isn't cracked you can do a clean-up bore of .030 and freshen the heads and you'd be good for another 100,000 or so. These were the high nickle blocks and they are very tough.

I'll be at Good Guys in March and maybe for a doughnut run in the S Bay. Are you going to try for the NorCal BBQ on Sunday? I'll be there rain or shine.

I don't know where the NorCal BBQ is, so I guess that means no. I am watching the weather today to see if it drys up just enough to go for a 10 mile drive in the Nova. But will try to make the Good Guys in March for sure. I have 2 buddies I usually go the the larger shows with, one with a 68 Mustang Fastback and the other with a 63 Corvette. We went to the Santa Cruz Hot Rods on the Beach in October but only on Sunday due to the rain on Saturday. There is also a church that puts on a toy drive show every year in November here in San Jose. There were over 500 cars at that one this year and they ran out of parking spaces. It had almost everything, even 2 Chevy Citations. I thought they were all junked by now.

You are right on one account. Ya gotta love this hobby.
