Hi all,

I have a '74 nova 350 2brl all stock. I know someone that has posi gears with a 7.5 ring gear. Will that work in the rearend I have? If not he says he has an s10 rear that the gears will go into, can I use the s10 rear in my car.

thanks for the help, this site has been a great help thus far.

Ian

Sorry can someone move this to the drivetrain forum....my bad!

No, the gears won't fit your 8.5" rear. I see a lot of guys using the S10 stuff, but I doubt it's as strong as what you have now. Why not just change the gears in your existing piece?

You should have the 8.5" 10 bolt in that car so the 7.5" gears won't work, but that is a very good rear in its own right, so I wouldn't swap it out for anything other than a 9" or something equal. You can build that 10 bolt to take some pretty hefty abuse.

Good question...I guess I am just not sure what to get and where. Is there a forum on how to make my rear into posi? Where would I get the parts Jegs, or Summit? Any help appreciated.

Thats good to know....the guy with the gears told me it was a good rear. So I guess I just need to find out what to get and where... And ofcourse someone to show me how to do it. I changed the pin on my plymouth years ago, so I have a general idea.

Are you anywhere near North Brookfield? You could call and bug Steve Magnante when he gets back from Barrett-Jackson. He's got some shops scoped out for doing magazine magazine features.
I wouldn't advise doing it yourself without the proper tools for measuring the things that can be critical to the life of your rearend.

I am about an hour and a half from north brookfield. It would be worth the drive though! Is he a good guy?

Yes, those will work. But a lot of rear builders (or at least those I've used/ talked to) don't like installing used gears if they can help it...

You need to buy a posi carrier. Happy now?:D

You can get them from any of the rearend supply parts houses, aftermarket speedshops (Summit, Jegs) or a junkyard. I got mine from a mid 70's Trans Am and gears from a Chevy van. If you set them up right they will be quiet and I still lay two black patches. (that was for WildBillyT):D

Ha ha!

I didn't say you COULDN'T install used gears... just that the rear installers I know don't like to do it.

We bought used gears and a used gov loc posi and new timkin bearings and seals for my sons 72 and did it ourselves and it been working just fine. No noise the car smokes both tires nicely! (haha) We spent $400 ! Is it bullit proof no, will he have fun in his budget Yes! Yuo can get them from wrecking yards, e-bay, buy em new all over the place etc. You need to look for wear patterns and cracks! Gears last pretty long!! So used ones are not that bad of a buy. If your going racing buy a new Eaton and Richmond or better gears!!!

DTS, RANDY ring and pinion, moser, and so many more....

as for tools, you will need a 20 ton press, bearing splitter, dial indicator (+- .001 error) with mag base... a pinion depth setting tool, impact wrench, a 1" out side mic(+- .001) a shim install pack side and pinion, new front seal, axle seals... and a good understanding of the methodology of setting up gears....

Ian I can tell you're on a budget (but only because I am just super sharp and because ALL of us are on budgets )

Just a suggestion...take a look at this thread...

Is this the best way to go? Absolutely not...I would much rather build up your 8.5". But it is pretty inexpensive and it is very strong.

this is a list of carriers you will still need to get all the bearings, shims, seals, etc. and i would definitely recommend finding a shop that can set one up for you.

If you are happy with your gear ratio, you would only need the posi carrier.

I was considering 373 thats what everyone is telling me so far....Im not exactly sure what I have now 342?

Its hard to say what ratio you have now. You will need to check that out. A 3.73 works fine for me, but I have a T5 and with the overdrive I'm turning about 2200 at 70 MPH. I didn't see what tranny you have, or how tall your tires are...or what you are planning to do with your ride.

My 74 is completely stock 350 2brl AT. Is it known what my car came with stock for gears? Tires right now are stock, but I will be going up to a 15 or 16". Mostly my car will be driven cruise nights, occasionally I will go to New England Dragway for fun.

That sounds like a very nice ride!! You are going to have a lot of fun with it!!:D Depending on your tire profile, you will likely end up with a tire diameter between 26" and 27". The final gear in a turbo 350 is 1:1 so you can go online and calculate your RPMs at highway speeds. There are lots of those calculators around...here is one:

http://tech.oldsgmail.com/axle_RPM.php

Just for laughs lets try some different gear ratios.
Tire size = 235/55 by 16 = 26.1 diameter
Rear ratio = 3.73
Speed = 70 (LOL! I know...but lets just assume you will keep it legal SOME of the time)
Engine RPM = 3364

See how it works? So you can plug in numbers to your heart's content and see whether you'll be cruising or screaming on your way to the doughnut shoppe!
