scherp69 30th-October-2008, 04:04 PM So I was thinking that we need a thread that will be useful for guys/girls looking to get new rims and tires. Well here is our chance. Hopefully this will end up having good response and becomes a sticky. It would be benificial for all gens to have this post. My goal with it is that people can look here and see how different rims look on a car, get ideas if they're looking for new rims or info if they're looking for a certain look/stance/backspace, etc, it will be here. Here's what I was thinking:
Post pics of your car with an angle that shows wheels and tires. Include in your post what make and model rims you have, what tires you have and what size they are, include the backspacing for front and back if you know it. It may also help to include your rear axle length or any other mods you've done to accomodate the set up you have. Also, maybe include some comments about how you like the tires, would you get them again, not sticky enough, too wide as they rub, whatever info you can give about your current/past set up that will help someone else choose their wheel/tire set up. Even if you car is not completed, but you have the tires and rims mounted, it may help someone else when choosing their set up.
Here's mine:
I have a 68 Acadian which will be a pro-touring car.
Wheels/rims: 18" Foose Nitrous II
Tires: Falken FK452 tires
Back set up: 10" wide with a 5.25" back space with 285/35/18
Front set up: 8" wide with I believe a 4.75" backspace with 245/35/18
Axle housing: it has been cut to 52 1/2" axle flange to axle flange. *EDIT* I changed the length as it was incorrect before.
Modifications: I have DSE deep tubs and am running a Prodigy Bar (g-bar/air bar) set up. The frame has been notched.
Issues with set up: With this set up, the rear tires look small in the deep tubs. I have minimal clearance with the fender, but nothing a little trimming couldn't help. Before I put in the deep tubs and notched the frame, the rear tires rubbed the frame rails. You could get away with stretching your wheel wells (which I had done before deciding on the deep tubs), but 275 would likely fit better with a stock set up. When I had the stock subframe on, the front tires rubbed when fully turned. At the time I had SSBC brakes on.
I'm currently changing my set up and the plans are to run either 11 or 12" rims with 315s on the back as they will fit and look way better. For the front, I will likely run 255's, but I have a Speed Tech subframe with the high clearance control arms. With that set up, I can run a 10" rim on the front and 275 tires.
Here's some pics:

The wheel and tire combo WILL change when I get more funding... and I haven't tried out the front sheet metal yet... :awkward:

Pwrtrip75 31st-October-2008, 09:00 AM scherp69, 69LT1Nova, and Strtlegal are you guys trying to make it into Donk magazine? I know they are all "pro-touring", but not sure what that has to do with Donk wheels. ...And yes they are. Word Yo.

Larger wheels means smaller sidewall ,means less flex means better handling. Also larger wheel means more room for large brake rotors , means better stopping! Add this to diferent a-arms that give better geometry and keep the tire flat in a corner especially under braking and wide front tire for more contact patch.

There are classy wheels of the nature you speak of....but then again there are donk wheels of the same size. Those lean more towards the Donk catagory.

It also has less traction as the tire can not contour to the road. Tire is stiffer.
It also will destroy a suspension system, the tire is very stiff sidewall and has no flexibility to absorb shock.
This is very hard on older suspension cars. The Nova has a high Center of gravity and will multiply these conditions.
Vehicles like Corvettes and such have these type tires engineered into the suspension.
And it will beat the crap out of your body!
You and the car!

Amen! If you don't have something constructive to add, keep it to yourself.
This is a very helpful thread, as many owners are looking to stuff the biggest wheel possible to gain the benifits of better handling, looks, and traction.
These cars are not "donks". :bored: They are purpose built. Please do not be a thread bully.

scherp69 31st-October-2008, 03:04 PM The purpose of this thread isn't for criticism of other's cars. It's to help others when choosing new rims and tire set ups. It doesn't matter if your car is pro-touring, pro-street or bone stock. Whether you have 14 inch rims or 20 inch rims, post some pics and provide some info to help others. I know that before I buy a set of rims I want an idea of how they are going to look. Well hopefully someone can look here and find something they like and help in their decision making.
Big Al....I know you got new rims recently, how about some pics and info. Everyone else, start posting pics and info. You might help someone finalize a decision. That's the great thing about this site....the diversity in styles, but they all need wheels and tires.

rear: 17x8 with 4.5" BS with 255/45/17 (GO WITH AT LEAST 5" ON AN 8" WHEEL)
I checked around the site before I purchased these wheels and it seemed like every one went 4.5", but 5" would have been way better. My lip is OK but the tires will rub on the inner fender on large bumps.
Suspension in the front is stock rebuilt with all new bushings etc and an upgraded sway bar and cut springs (1 coil). The rear suspension is 100% stock with mono and air shocks as a bandaid to stiffen it up untill I can get my hotchkis set up. The plan is to do the rear in the next couple of months.

Front 17"x7" and not sure of tire's up front. I could find the back tires but I couldn't find a matching pair for the front. They were either to short, taller than the back, or to wide. So I've decided to go with 15". Rear is going to be 15x10 with 5" BS and the front's are 15x6 with 4' BS. I'm going with Wheel Vintiques series 50 SS 396.
Tire's I'm looking at a 295/50/15 in the back and 215/65/15 up front. If anybody has this set up could you post some pictures so I can get an idea how it's going to look.

Man I really love the way these wheels look. Matches the Nova great. This thread is perfect for someone that know squat about wheels and how they fit on Nova's.
What is back spacing? I would love to get a new set of wheels. 17 inchers.
I bought my Nova with these wheels and tires. They were brand new. The guy installed them and only drove less than 10 miles. Than let the car sit for 6 years:eek: before I came. The rims got a little rust from sitting so long.
Wheels are 15 X 7's all around with 235/60/15 tires. I only know that the rims are Cragers.

Love the stance.
Do you have any work done in the rear, mini-tubs, offset springs, fender lip cut or rolled? Or is it bone stock? Any problems with rubbing?
Thanks!

No rubbing up in front. I want to lower the car a bit up front and I think that it will still be fine with no rubbing. I'm going to get lowered springs from CPP (1.5")
Villain281H 18th-February-2009, 08:50 PM Okay here are a few of mine. Wheels are Center Line Scorpions: 15 x 6 front (3.5 BS) with a 205/70/15, 15 x 8 rear (5-1/4 BS) with 275/60/15 or 28 x 10.5 slicks (usually use a 5/16 to 7/16" spacer to center the wheel just right).

From 2001 on stock worn out springs.

From my recent build, shot last month. Same tires (now running 275/60/15 M/T ET Street Radials in back), Landrum mono-leafs and Moroso Trick springs with 1" cut from them (lightest set you can get, gives it 5-3/4" of front end travel). Rear end is a 12 bolt from a '69 Chevelle that I narrowed to match Nova specs (3/4" per side).

taz3 25th-February-2009, 05:56 PM I put stock GTA wheels on my 69 the fronts just hit the frame at full turn, but the rears have way more clearance then I expected!
245 50 16 The fronts have less BS 4.5" The rears are 5", it's enough that the rears will not work on the front, they hit too much at full turn against the sub frame at the rear.
Here's a pic of the rear, there's about 3/4" to the shock and it sits inside the well with plenty of clearance on the outside of the quarter.

71'Nova 383 27th-February-2009, 07:02 PM User Project Nova informed me of this EXTREMELY valuable tip on a rims backspacing.
When you order a rim the actual width is 1" wider than what you order. For example, if you order a 8", it's really 9" from outside lip to outside lip. Backspacing is measured from the back of the hub surface to the outside of the back lip of the rim, which is a 1/2" past the tire bead. Your goal is to center the tire in the wheel well.
What this all means. After you figure out your BS you need to add the rim lip thickness . I know,. When I measured my car 5" BS would center the tire perfectly. The rims I ordered have a 1/2" lip front and back. So I ordered a 5.5" BS rim. I hope I explained this good enough to understand?
juliushell 7th-May-2009, 11:03 AM Sounds reasonable, i´m going to put rally´s on my 74 nova, i want original look, use to have some cragars, but didn´t like it very much, so i´m going back to original, would try 15x7 front & 15x8 back, backspace 4.5. but this would be maybe next month when all body and engine work is finished.
Regards.
bobbybnova 11th-May-2009, 12:05 AM Just thought i shared this with yall.. I took these wheels off my bmw just see how they would look on my nova.. They are Asanti wheels 20x8.5 in the front and 20x10 in the back. Im not going to use the wheels im going with a nice set of 18 inch wheels. http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/5057/part1233437611909jpeg.jpg
kirk69nova 11th-May-2009, 05:41 PM My .02...I had on the front my 69 Nova 14X7 Rally wheels with 4.5" BS and a 215X70 tire. The sidewall was literally only 1/8" from the tie rod and the tire rubbed the inner fender at a full left hand turn. I tried the same wheels with 235X70, just to see if there was any chance of fitting and the sidewall rubbed the tie rod end...no chance! I now have 15X7 rallys with 4.25 BS and 215X60 tires. These fit fine.
Here are the 215X70 on 14X7 with 4.5" BS

redline337 9th-October-2009, 10:34 PM ok, i've looked at tons of posts and can't find where anyone is running 15x8 rear wheels with 4.5"bs. I have 295/50-15s right now, but i want to lose the air shocks so i can get some weight transfer. I'd like to run a 275, but i don't wanna put out the money if they're gonna rub too bad. should i just go with a 255 or chance the 275s? I don't mind rolling the fenders a bit more. thanks for your input.

JMO, I'd go with the 255. I don't like rubs, especially if it costs you a premature tire replacement.
Leobuff 19th-October-2009, 11:47 PM Great thread. It helped me decide on 255/60 15 on Weld 15-8s with 4.5 BS for the rear. I have 15-4 with 3.5 BS for the front but still have no idea what tire size for the front. Want as skinny as I can get on the wheels. Any Sugestions? These will go on the 72.

AldoNova67 12th-January-2010, 08:22 PM I thought I would post pics since it might give some people an idea what 18" and 20" look like. They are Coys C5 with stock suspension set up. They do not rub anywhere.... I personally love the look and handling. My shocks are new along with front end and it doesnt feel much rougher than stock tires.
