Doesn't rev up when it is in gear

Hey guys:
I just finished switching to 4 disc brake set up. I took the car for a ride to wear the pads a little since they don't lock up and I thought that may help. Anyways, when the car idles it rev up easily althought it is harsh kind of (I need exhaust gasket, and tune the crab) but when I put it in the gear it really doesn't rev up and doesn't take off at all. I also have problem with steering (I post another thread in steering/suspension section) but this new problem concerns me about my tranny. It is inline 6 with powerglide and point type dizzy. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

did it ever occur that a 6 cylinder is just slow? my car doesn't rev up in gear really because it's a 6. in neutral it's great, no load.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but the car isn't supposed to rev freely in gear. If it did, then you would have tranny problems. Just remember you can tune a piano, but you can't tune a crab.

Ok, It seems I didn't explain it right, I am sorry. Let me try again. When car is in park, it idles ok (as I said it needs tune up) and if I press the gas pedal it revs up. When I put the car in gear (rear or forward) and I press the gas pedal, RPM doesn't go up and car doesn't accelerate or it may be move a little, even some times it feel that the engine is gona die. I don't think this has anythng with tune up otherwise it was so off hwy it starts with no problem and idles ok?with all these been said, I am rookie with these things and don't know much.
Thanks

dont let these guys get ya down.:D messin' with people is our way of saying you are our friend:yes:

As for the problem, is this an automatic or stick car? Is the motor a tired run-down one or was it recently rebuilt? If you have a really old motor, that may be a lot of the problem. If the car is a stick shift, try checking this... Don't tell anyone, but when I tried to move a tired stick shift Nova this summer it would not go anywhere! I thought it was bad gas or a dying battery. Turn out I forgot to take the parking brake off:o Maybe check that:D

In line 6 with 63000 mile on it. Power glide auto tranny. (3 speed or 4 speed ) Parking brake was not engaged. I was thinking about vaccum but I can not connect the dots how that can be the cause.

For the record, Powerglide is a 2-speed automatic transmission. Yours should aluminum unless it was swapped for a pre-67 one. Chances are it is air cooled.

:)

Have you ever tried to run an old car without the vaccuum line to the distributor? it is not a pretty thing. check the line, they are cheap anyway.:)

With a rough idle, go with vacuum, and then start tuning the carb. Running way too rich can make it bog and die. But it sounds like your carb is loading up to me. Do you ever see gas leak out of the carburetor? You could always beat on the float bowl with a screwdriver and see if it will unstick...that's fun to do :)

when in doubt use a hammer.

sounds like this guy just needs to get rid of the 6 cylinder though. i'm sick of mine, just don't have the time to drop a new motor in yet.
