hey guys,
id like your quick thoughts- im trying to see if i can do the following this afternoon: i want to remove my power steering box for my manual one.
yes i have the manual box w/ rag joint and pitman arm.
i cannot find the thread that told me how to do the install.
do i have to jack up the motor and remove the motor mount on the left?
i was thinking of just removing the box with pitman arm connected and just install the manual box as one unit so i dont think i need a puller?
thoughts greatly appreciated.

If the area under the gear is open it should just drop out.

hey guys
can anyone review this pic for me?
ive reached the point where ive removed the ps box and mocked up the manual box. fits right. but im stumped on the rag joint coupler and the auto parts stores are now closed. the box i bought on ebay came with a new supposed manual rag joint shown on the right in the photo. the ps rag joint coupler is on the left. im not sure if i have the right part though.
the big and small "line up" pins on the manual coupler are not threaded and have nothing that secure them to the steering "plate".
i keep saying to myself... what the hx!!?!!!
anyone done this and can offer any insight?
thanks

You are loosing me. There are only two threaded bolts needed to secure it to the plate. looks like you have 2 threaded and the two safety pins. What am I missing?

Oh are you saying it is index wrong??
well...yeah, kind of.
the manual and ps box have different pins and securing bolts- to begin with, im wondering if this is right?
also, the securing bolts are supposed to go into the "hole" area of the steering plate, therefore, they dont really screw into anything.
and the index pins go into their respective holes.
please see pic below.
thanks again for your time.

Maybe 3rd gen Novas are different but all the A, F and X bodies I have ever worked on the threaded bolts go into the 2 holes and the pins go into the slots, if the other joint wasn't mounted that way there is really nothing holding it all together. The pins are just there to allow "emergency" steering if the coupler fails.
You may have to drill one of the holes bigger to get the bolts in. Make sure you drill the correct one or the steering wheel will be upside down.

that would make sense that the threaded bolts would go into the holes.
thats how the ps box coupler in the first pic is.
before i go drilling, i think im gonna make sure it is the right coupler to begin with. you never know- the guy that sold it to me could have sent the wrong one. (sigh...)
oh well.
it will get done.
i hope napa or oreilly will have one that i can compare to.
thanks again.

When mounted to the steering gear stub shaft do the holes line up correctly with the steering wheel and the pitman arm in the straight forward positions? If so it will be correct.

yes im pretty sure...but for some reason i cant visualize it now.
i think it all mounts flush.
i will post a pic of the set up if i get to work on it tomorrow night.
gosh- that ps box came out in less than 45 minutes...just at a road bump.
