This was a Friends car and I don't know how it was done. I believe it has tinted plastic glued on over the tail lights.

Maybe you can get some one to photo shop it for you. Here is a pick of a black 74

Personally I wouldn't do it....not that it looks bad but it's another reason for the cops to bother you. Also, you take the chance of getting rearended or backing into something if someone cannot see your signals/brake lights.

Myself I want my safety equipment such as lights should be as bright as possible.

It wouldn't make a difference to any law enforcement, insurance co, or traffic court.
I'll share a true story of a buddy of mine back when we were teenagers... He had a Trans Am, probably around a 79 or 80 model with the shaker hood. (The one with a hole in the middle and scoop that sat on top of the engine) He decided one day that he wanted to try to make his car look "cool" so he headed down to the local hot rod shop. He bought the biggest fiberglass hood scoop they had, proceeded to remove the factory scoop and bolt this montrosity over the hole in the hood. Keep in mind this scoop was intended for drag cars only, going straight down a track  This thing literally sat probably close to a foot and a half high! He calls me over to his house to check it out and go on a pilot run. Good thing he didn't try to drive this thing by himself because he couldn't see any traffic on his passenger side  He finally decided this wasn't the best thing for his car, even though he thought it was cool. This wasn't the only unsafe thing he's done to his vehicles but it's one I'll always remember.

I agree, if your going to drive it, don't darken them at all. You need all the visibility you can get. Older cars are allready at a disadvantage compared to newer cars with smaller tailights and fewer of them. The last thing you want to see when you exit your car is a wrinkled up quarter panel and tail panel....

Not to be a smart guy,but even if someones brake lights are out and you hit them,it's still your fault. This still doesn't make it a good idea to tint the lenses though,I've done a couple S10's.
