hey guys,
I have been collecting parts to build another 3rd gen. 70-72 car.
I have a solid pair of fenders, hood and right door.
Im looking for a good left door.
I have found a solid 73-74 left door.
can i use this, and convert a 73-74 door to 70-72?
if this isnt possible, im just thinking about taking out the wing glass on the 70-72 door and just using lexan?
thoughts appreciated.

edit...
are the hinges the same- bolt on or welded?
and will the 70-72 door panel line up?
thanks

The hindges are all welded after 70,so they'll work, but the door panels are different at the vent window,on top.

I always thought the door handle and window crank were in different positions. I've tons of doors, ought to go experiment to know for sure.

I do know the window regulator is completely different than the vent window cars. Not sure about any of the other internal parts.

now that you mention it- the latch mechanisms are slightly different.

got a solid 70-72 drivers door you wish to sell?

i wonder if i converted the 73-74 door to a 70-72, if the panel would fit.
thanks for the replies guys. ive got a drivers scrap door- has good glass and parts- it just looks too rusted to use. so the plan was to get a 73-74 door and use my parts to make a good 70-72 door.
maybe this is more trouble than its worth!

I was just talking about appearance from the outside, and the door lining up with everything else, The internals of the doors are different and I dont believe a 70-72 door panel will fit a 73-74....

The 73-74 doors will assemble to a 72 and earlier, but you'll need to keep the 73-74 door panel, glass, etc.
The inner skin is different between 69-72 and 73-74. If you're not concerned about 100% correctness, and like the look without the vent window, just put a matched pair of 73-74 doors on there.

The doors are definately different, the regulator holes are in a different position, the holes for the vent window attachment aren't there, the interior panels won't go on with different clip locations.
We put 73/74 doors on my Son's 70 and ended up not using the vent window assemblies and also made custom interior trim panels because the 70 model wouldn't work.

One major benefit of the no vent window is the door will also be lighter too.

Nope! Those 73-74 doors have a side-impact crash beam in there. It makes them heavier. Probably a little safer too.

hey guys thanks for all the replies.
ive stumbled upon an awesome find today at the ONLY junk yard in my area accepting "old" cars. i found a 72 ventura that came in today.
i browse the place once every other month or so.
the guy said the car just got there- i pulled both rust free doors.
got em for $200!!! one of em has a little surface rust. i scrutinized them pretty well- solid! no bondo! very straight!
guess i wont need to worry about converting these.
thanks for everyones time and input.
i learned a lot!
just got lucky today- at the right time!
btw- if anyone needs driver quality alum. trim i will make someone a good deal.
